~Lionel Collins STEM School, formerly Ames Elementary, is a magnet school within the Jefferson Parish Public School System. Any child entering Pre-Kindergarten through second grade residing in Jefferson Parish is eligible for enrollment. Second through Fifth grade requires a minimum of a 2.0 grade average and no behavior referrals. STEM education is the intentional integration of science, technolo

gy, engineering, and mathematics, and their associated practices to create a student-centered learning environment in which students investigate and engineer solutions to problems, and construct evidence-based explanations of real-world phenomena with a focus on a student’s social, emotional, physical, and academic needs through shared contributions of schools, families, and community partners. The STEM acronym was introduced in 2001 by scientific administrators at the U.S. The organization previously used the acronym SMET when referring to the career fields in those disciplines or a curriculum that integrated knowledge and skills from those fields. Impact

Components

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math must all be in the mix. In any STEM program, all four disciplines in the STEM acronym must be present in lessons and activities, and integrated (woven tightly together; interdependent) throughout the learning.Nov 17, 2013

Value

STEM-based education teaches children more than science and mathematics concepts. The focus on hands-on learning with real-world applications helps develop a variety of skill sets, including creativity and 21st-century skills.
