Another Successful Year of FallEdCon! 🌟

FallEdCon26 brought educators together on Monday for an inspiring day of collaboration, connection, and professional learning! This year’s theme, Moving from Theory to Practice, sparked meaningful conversations around Visible Learning, Technology, and Change.

A big thank-you to our keynote speakers, Tommy Thompson and Brian Buffington, and to the 12 local teachers, Oakland Schools - Michigan, and the Michigan's MTSS Technical Assistance Center for sharing their knowledge and expertise!

New this year, FallEdCon After Hours invited Northern Michigan University alumni and friends to an evening of food, conversation, and Wildcat connections!

This year’s conference featured three locations to support educators across the region:

🏫Marquette Senior High School: Paraprofessional Educators & School-Based Mental Health Staff
🎒Marquette-Alger RESA: Early Childhood, Great Start Readiness Program & Junior Kindergarten Educators

Family Night at Superior Hills Elementary 📖

Marquette-Alger RESA staff participated in the Superior Hills Elementary Family Night on October 6 in support of their Fall Family Night! This event provided interactive parent learning sessions paired with fun, companion activities for JK-5th grade students. A fun time was had by all!

In Anishinaabemowin, the word for education is akinomaage, which translates deeply to "learning from the earth and the land" - and that’s exactly what our ELA Learning Team did on October 1st!

We created custom journals, dove into A Place to Write by Rob and Amanda Montgomery, and took an inspiring field trip to the Seven Grandfathers Teaching Monument along Lake Superior. Guided by Ty Detloff, Director of the Center for Native American Studies at Northern Michigan University, we immersed ourselves in Native concepts, ceremony, language, and place-based writing to bring back to our students.

Growing Minds UP Fall Cohort Brings Hydroponic Gardening to Classrooms 🌱

Through REMC & Growing Minds UP Fall Cohort's Statewide Growing Minds Project, educators received 10 Gardyn hydroponic garden tower devices for their classrooms, along with training and support that fosters real world, hands-on scientific inquiry and data literacy!

Hydroponic gardening allows growers to overcome food scarcity, space and environmental challenges (like Michigan’s short growing season), to provide fresh, healthy, clean produce year round. This tower is AI Driven, adjusting water, light and alerting its manager to any needs the plants may have.

Students learn to test pH levels and nutrient concentrations, experiment with lights, temperature, and water levels, and dig into how various concentrations affect growth rates and plant health. This enhances our students' understandings of science and nutrition while thinking critically about water usage and environmental sustainability.

Congratulations to Ashly Gleason, Marquette-Alger RESA Student Wellness Coordinator, on her nomination to serve as a National Association of School Psychologists (NASP) Student Leader representing her cohort at Andrews University!

NASP Student Leaders connect their graduate programs with the national school psychology community, sharing resources and opportunities that support future school psychologists.

Ashly is pursuing her Education Specialist degree in School Psychology while continuing to support social-emotional and behavioral health initiatives throughout the Marquette-Alger region. This opportunity builds on her commitment to students and educators and offers new connections and perspectives to bring back to our local schools.

Marquette & Alger Students: a Summer of Exploring Career Possibilities 🌟

It was another very successful summer filled with many Work-Based Learning Opportunities for local students throughout Marquette and Alger Counties! In collaboration with Michigan Rehabilitation Services, Marquette-Alger RESA supported over 30 students in building up their job skills at a wide variety of worksites this summer through the Summer Work Programming.

Many students participated in individual internship to explore possible careers. Thank you to our community partners at Hema-Tyke Childcare and Education Center, Edge Mechanical, The David & Thu Brulé YMCA of Marquette County-Marquette, Chatham Co-op, City of Munising, Central Community Daycare, Poets Pet Parlor Doggie Daycare and Boarding, Marquette Regional History Center, KLEEN WORX, PROFILES Salon, Doozers, and Super One Foods Negaunee.

Other students participated in work experiences with a small group of students and a Job Coach on site. Thank you to our community partners at the following sites: Michigan Department of Natural Resources (Van Riper & Marquette), Partridge Creek Farm, Northern Michigan University Dining/Catering Kitchen, Goodwill, and Super One Foods Negaunee.

Thank you to the staff and community organizations and businesses that made these opportunities possible for our local students this past summer!

The Marquette-Alger RESA Superior Support Health Team was proud to help plan and participate in the Mqt County Su***de Prevention Alliance (MC-SPA) Walk for Hope!

Alongside community members and local partners, our team showed up in support of su***de prevention and the importance of connection. Events like this create space to remember loved ones, support one another, and make conversations about mental health more visible.

Thank you to MC-SPA, fellow organizers, volunteers, and everyone who walked with us. We’re grateful to be part of a community that shows up for one another.
