🌲ORLM In Action!🌲

This summer, Northern Michigan University Outdoor Recreation Leadership & Management student Gabbi Maki is putting her skills to work as the Chalet & Visitor Center Manager at Copper Peak in her hometown of Ironwood.

Through an Innovate Marquette pilot internship program, Gabbi has played a key role in creating the brand-new Copper Peak Visitors Center, managing both the Visitors Center and Chalet gift shop, coordinating merchandise, sharing Copper Peak’s history with visitors, designing apparel, and supporting fundraising efforts for the revitalization project.

As an Ironwood native, Copper Peak has been part of Gabbi’s life since childhood—and now she’s helping shape its future. 💚💛

Her internship is a great example of how ORLM students can turn their passion for the outdoors and their communities into meaningful, hands-on careers right here in the Upper Peninsula! Keep up the great work Gabbi!

The School of Health and Human Performance had the wonderful opportunity to partner with the NMU Center for Rural Healtn and host Athletic Training and Exercise Science sessions during this year's UP Future Health Leaders Camp! 9th and 10th graders from the UP and beyond had the chance to learn about the domains of athletic training and exercise science, and got to try out some taping applications and try out some equipment in our exercise science lab!

Huge thanks to the NMU Center for Rural Health for hosting such a great camp and allowing HHP to be apart of it!💚💛

One week later, and we're still thinking about the 2026 NMU Summer Athletic Training Conference!☀️

It was a great day of learning, networking, and connecting with 46 athletic trainers and athletic training students from across the Upper Peninsula and beyond—including so many NMU Athletic Training alumni!

A huge thank you to the Michigan Athletic Trainers Society for sponsoring this outstanding continuing education event. We can't wait to do it all again in 2027! 💚💛

The NMU School of Health and Human Performance would like to congratulate our own alum, Maureen McFadden (Management of Health and Fitness B.S., '16) on receiving the NMU Outstanding Young Alumni Award!

Maureen has dedicated her career to improving the lives of older adults across Michigan's Upper Peninsula. As Senior Services Manager for the City of Marquette, she has expanded programs, secured funding, built strong community partnerships, and increased access to essential services that support healthy, independent living.

Congratulations, Maureen, on this well-deserved recognition!💚💛

Rounding out our Athletic Training Conference speaker highlights just in time for the conference tomorrow, is Dr. Bryan Dixon!💚💛

Dr. Dixon is a sports medicine physician at Advanced Center for Orthopedics here in Marquette, where he has been providing care for patients since 2008. In addition to providing non-operative orthopedic and sports medicine care, Dr. Dixon also serves as a team physician at Northern Michigan University, providing medical care to NMU student-athletes. He also previously served as the Medical Director for the United States Olympic Education Center in Marquette.

Dr. Dixon will be presenting on "Ultrasound in Sports Medicine," where he will discuss how the use of ultrasound can enhance and support high-quality patient care.

It's conference week! Continuing our Athletic Training Conference speaker highlights is Dr. Michael Houle!💚💛

Dr. Houle is a Doctor of Chiropractic, Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician, and Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist at North Coast Spine and Sport. Originally from Marquette, he earned his Doctor of Chiropractic and Master of Science in Sports Medicine from the University of Western States after completing his bachelor's degree in Exercise Physiology at Michigan State University. He is passionate about helping active individuals recover from injury and optimize performance through evidence-based, interdisciplinary care.

Dr. Houle will be presenting on "Interdisciplinary Care of the Athlete: The Role of the Chiropractic Sports Physician," where he will discuss how chiropractic sports physicians collaborate with athletic trainers and other healthcare professionals to improve athlete outcomes and support long-term performance and recovery.

Continuing our Athletic Training Conference speaker highlights is Dr. Carley Maanika!💚💛

Carley is a Physical Therapist and Certified Athletic Trainer at UP Rehab. She earned her bachelor's degree in Athletic Training from Northern Michigan University in 2015 before completing her Doctor of Physical Therapy degree at Central Michigan University in 2019. Today, she works with a wide variety of patients, helping them return to the activities they love through individualized rehabilitation and evidence-based care.

Carley will be presenting "Hypermobility in the Athletic Population: Assessment and Treatment Considerations," where attendees will learn how to recognize hypermobility in athletes and explore assessment techniques and treatment strategies to support safe participation and long-term success.

IECC Coordinator Nicole Colemancand SHHP Associate Dean/Director Julie Rochester teamed up with the 2026 Wildcat Performing Arts Academy Summer Intensive to teach these talented students all about dance and performing arts injury prevention, recognition, and treatment!

Continuing our NMU Athletic Training Conference speaker highlights is Dr. Abby Hereau!💚💛

Abby is a Doctor of Physical Therapy, NMU Athletic Training alumni, and Co-Founder & President of I Am An Athlete Too. Her passion for adaptive sports has driven her work to create opportunities for athletes of all abilities to participate, compete, and succeed.

Abby will be presenting on “Adaptive Track and Field 101: An Introduction to Para Sport,” where she will discuss the foundations of para sport, athlete eligibility, adaptive track and field, equipment considerations, and how supporting adaptive athletes differs from traditional athletic populations.
