“Get Ready, Get Reading”
Program Information 2014-15
AmeriCorps is a national service program (often described as a "domestic peace corps") designed to strengthen citizenship and the ethic of service by engaging Americans on a full-time (1700 hours) basis to help communities address their challenges. Since 2000, the Marquette-Alger Regional Educational Service Agency (MARESA) has sponsored an Ame
riCorps program serving schools and human service non-profit agencies in Marquette and Alger counties. Marquette-Alger RESA (MARESA) has applied for grant funding for 11 Full-Time and 2 Half-Time AmeriCorps positions for the 2014-2015 program year. These AmeriCorps members will provide focused one-to-one or small-group tutoring using evidence-based reading interventions and progress monitoring specifically targeted to the most salient area of reading need by grade level. Tutors will work with students not performing "at" benchmark, but "closest to" achieving benchmark. This is the least likely student population to receive services through other state or federal support programs. Service will take place in the K-12 schools across Marquette and Alger counties. Via the schools' benchmark literacy screening and AmeriCorps member progress monitoring, participating students' reading growth will be documented. In addition, AmeriCorps members will leverage an additional 48-60 volunteers trained to locate, prepare and conduct supplemental literacy support activities to enhance and extend the program's reach. Get Ready, Get Reading seeks to improve academic performance. AmeriCorps members are contracted to serve one year at a time. During their year of service, full-time 2013-2014 members will receive a taxable stipend of $12,100. While serving, members with outstanding student loans receive (interest-free) forbearance for those student loans. Full-time members are eligible to receive health care benefits, and may be eligible to receive childcare benefits. After successfully completing a term of service, members receive educational awards from the Corporation for National and Community Service. Segal Education Awards are considered taxable income in the year they are used to pay student loans or used for college tuition. Full-time members receive an educational award in the amount of $5,645 per year of full time service. Visit: http://edaward.org/ if you have any questions about the Segal Education Award. AmeriCorps members may serve a total of two terms, if they reapply and are selected for a second year. During the year of service, members also receive professional development services, and participate in other activities as part of a wider program (e.g., regional service projects or trainings).
