Save the date for our first event of the school year: The LLIS Fall Kickoff will be Thursday, September 10th from 5:00 to 6:00 pm in the Whitman Commons (room 136). Join Dr. Anna Zimmer, German Professor and Assistant Director of the Honors Program, for tonight's excellent presentation on her U.P. 9/11 Oral History Project! We hope to see you at 7:00 pm in the Olson Library's Atrium.

The Beaumier U.P. Heritage Center presents an event about the Upper Peninsula 9/11 Oral History Project with Honors Assistant Director Anna Zimmer on Wednesday, August 26, at 7 p.m. The event will take place in the Atrium of the Lydia M. Olson Library in Harden Hall.

While much has been written about national and urban responses to 9/11, even 25 years after the attacks, little exists about how rural or Midwestern communities experienced that day and its aftermath. The UP 9/11 Oral History Project, conducted in collaboration with Dr. Zimmer’s Honors Program students, aims to address that gap by foregrounding regional memory, especially as shaped by geographical isolation, local institutions, and the UP’s Cold War military legacy.

Ha terminado el programa de NMU de 2026 en Salamanca, España. Concluimos nuestras cuatro semanas el 30 de mayo. Gozamos mucho de la experiencia, mejorando nuestro castellano, aprendiendo sobre el pasado y el presente ilustres de España y Salamanca, visitando sus maravillosos edificios, museos y mercados, comiendo su excelente comida, cantando karaoke, explorando su ambiente medieval y encariñándonos unos con otros y con nuestras familias anfitrionas. Ésta es una foto sacada durante una de nuestras excursiones favoritas, a las torres de las catedrales de Salamanca. El programa de 2027 estará a cargo de Michael Joy.

NMU’s 2026 Faculty-led Study Abroad to Salamanca, Spain, has come to an end. We finished our four-week stay on Saturday, May 30. We had a blast improving our Spanish, learning about Spain and Salamanca’s illustrious past and present, visiting its stunning buildings, museums and markets, eating its great food, singing karaoke, exploring medieval haunts, and bonding with host families and each other. Here is a picture from one of our favorite outings, a visit to the heights of Salamanca’s twin cathedrals. The 2027 Salamanca group will be led by Michael Joy.

During their time on the Salamanca Faculty-Led Study Abroad program, students are sharing their adventures! Here’s Jordan’s entry:

El miércoles 20.05, visitamos el casa-museo de Zacarías Gonzalez. Él era un pintor español del siglo XX. Empezó a dibujar cuándo tenía 3 años y fue artista toda su vida. El museo fue separado en tres etapas distintas de estilos artísticos durante la vida de Zacarías Gonzalez: primera figuración, abstracto, y segunda figuración.

On Wednesday 5/20, we visited the House-Museum of Zacarías Gonzalez. He was a Spanish painter from the 20th century. He began drawing at the age of three and was an artist his entire life. The museum was separated into three distinct periods of art styles in Zacarías Gonzalez’s life: first figurative period, abstract period, and second figurative period.

El lunes, fuimos a la Catedral Nueva para subir las escaleras y ver las torres. Es una iglesia icónica de Salamanca, y un ejemplo del estilo de arquitectura gótico. Estaba muy divertida para ver Salamanca de una punta muy alta. Si este mes en España me ha enseñado algo, es que siempre es bueno para ver cosas de una perspectiva nueva :)

On Monday, we went to the New Cathedral to climb its stairs and view its towers. It is an iconic church in Salamanca, and an example of Gothic architecture. It was a lot of fun to see Salamanca from a high point. If this month in Spain has taught me anything, it’s that it is always good to see things from a new perspective :)

En una excursión personal, encontré un manuscrito iluminado en una librería de antigüedades. Como aficionado a la historia medieval, este viaje ha sido fascinante para aprender sobre la historia de Salamanca.

On a personal excursion, I found an illuminated manuscript in an antique bookstore. As a fan of medieval history, this trip has been amazing for learning the history of Salamanca.
