Congratulations to the ten Upper Peninsula high school seniors honored at Construction Connect U.P. (CCUP) Draft Day in Escanaba this May! These students officially signed on to apprenticeships in construction trades.
Through the CCUP program, run by the Upper Peninsula Construction Council (UPCC), seniors spent the school year rotating through trades like electrical, plumbing, HVAC, general contracting, and brick masonry to find the path that fit them best. Each student also earned a $2,000 scholarship which came from $187,500 that the UPCC received on behalf of the Michigan WDI!
There were 10 students that participated UP wide:
3 from Delta Schoolcraft ISD
3 from Dickinson-Iron Intermediate School District

"For me the internship means an opportunity to get your feet wet in a field that you may be interested in. It has given me a chance to learn and begin to understand how the industry works. It also helps you understand what the day looks like from an employee's point of view and less so as a customer. I think internships can be very valuable to other students and provide them an opportunity to explore a field they are interested in."

"My internship has been very important to me because it's providing me with lots of opportunity, knowledge, and freedom. I'm learning more about my interests than I could anywhere else, while being useful and enjoying the work I'm doing. It gives me autonomy by splitting my day between school and an internship, it teaches me about professional workplace procedures and culture, and a way to learn without focusing only on grades and homework."
-- Zachary Button from Marquette Area Public Schools' Marquette Senior High School is in the City of Marquette - Government Engineering Department.
