The next medical breakthrough isn't coming from a massive corporate pharma lab, it’s happening right here in the Upper Peninsula.

Dr. Maris Cinelli and her team of student "alkaloid hunters" at NMU are researching local and traditional medicinal plants to find a cure for antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

From uncovering rare compounds in h**p to testing traditional Mexican nightshade plants that kill stubborn skin infections, these NMU students are doing world-changing work right on campus. It turns out there is a incredibly fine line between what kills you and what cures you, and these wild discoveries could unlock the next generation of life-saving antibiotics.

Think advanced tech hubs only exist in Silicon Valley or major metro areas? Think again.

In Marquette, local manufacturers Exalta Group, Able Medical Devices, and Mount Manufacturing, along with Northern Michigan University, have quietly built a world-class medical device hub. But the real magic isn’t just the cutting-edge technology; it’s how they are keeping local talent right here in the U.P.

Through a unique partnership, NMU students step onto the manufacturing floor as freshmen, gaining real-world experience and high-paying careers before they even graduate. It’s a game-changer for the local economy and a blueprint for how smaller communities can compete on a global scale.

What if the key to fighting brain cancer could be found in a routine 15-minute lab test? 🧠🔬

Instead of invasive surgeries and agonizing weeks waiting for answers, an incredible team of Northern Michigan University faculty and student researchers in the Upper Michigan Brain Tumor Center has developed a novel fluorescent biosensor called D2HGlo. When mixed with bodily fluids, this "liquid biopsy" tool lights up to detect tumor-developing molecules in mere minutes.

From mass-producing the biosensor right on campus to exploring early clinical applications, these Wildcats are proving that early access to advanced undergraduate research changes everything.

Can you turn rejected trash into clean energy? ♻️🔥

Chris Anderson thought so. While studying at Northern Michigan University, he teamed up with a unique university initiative to license a patented technology that does exactly that.

Today, his startup, Revesys Energy, is taking difficult-to-recycle paper and plastics out of landfills and transforming them into high-energy fuel pellets for heavy industries.

The best part? It slashes greenhouse gas emissions by up to 40% compared to traditional coal.

It’s an incredible story of what happens when a great idea meets the right support system.
