Here's a little throwback to the first decade of the SLFP! Can you believe it's been 35 years since the program originated in 1991? 🌲

On Saturday, September 19th, you can celebrate with us during the All Alumni Reception and recognition of 35 Years of the Student Leader Fellowship Program!

The event will take place 4:30pm - 7:30pm at the Ramada in Marquette, MI. You can register for free through the Linktree located in our bio.

While this post may have been honoring our 90s grads, the reception is open to all NMU and SLFP Alumni! Hope to see you all there this fall, and look out for more throwbacks!

Ellen completed her CSI at Michigan Ice Fest. Teaching and encouraging others to learn how to ice climb at Pictured Rocks. Two things were very impactful for Ellen, first was her relationship with her mentor and the second was her CSI. She graduated with a degree in Psychology and will be heading to Alaska this summer to work on a Whale Watching Guide Boat.

Madi completed her CSI requirements with the Ausable River Canoe Marathon and by assisting with science lessons in a 4th Grade classroom at Roscommon Elementary in Grayling. One of Madi’s favorite parts of the SLFP was getting to know her Mentor, Karin. She will be heading home for the summer to work as an EMT in Grayling. She will graduate in the fall and is looking to attend a forestry graduate school in the future.

Mara completed her CSI at UPAWS where she walked dogs and also participated in their fundraising efforts. Her favorite part of the SLFP was her time at UPAWs as it afforded her the opportunity to engage with the organization on multiple levels -from hand-on animal care to coordinating a successful fundraiser. Mara graduated with a degree in Biochemistry and she has accepted a full-time position in Utah.

Emma completed her CSI with Fighting Words in Dublin Ireland. Fighting Words is an organization that provides free programs and mentoring in creative writing and related arts. Emma shared she really enjoyed the fall retreats and the vibe that encouraged student fellows to discuss and share their viewpoints. Emma graduated with a degree in social work and will be attending the University of Chicago to complete a masters degree in social work.

Ben completed his CSI with the Center for Rural Health - UP Future Health Leaders Camp over the summer. His favorite memory in the SLFP was the fall retreats, specifically teambuilding activities, meeting other student fellows and feeling energized after leaving the retreat. He will graduate in May 2027 with a degree in Biology and hopes to attend medical school in the future. This summer he will return to work at the UP Future Health Leaders Camp.

Abigale completed her CSI requirement by teaching kids and women’s self defense courses at Lake Effect Jiu Jitsu. She completed over 200 hours of service which included traveling to the Wisconsin Dells to coach at a one day tournament. She will graduate with her degree in Nursing next December.

Ailee completed her CSI with Start Fit, Stay Fit. One of Ailee’s favorite memories was the most recent Friendsgiving Event, stating that it was so fulfilling to see so many SLFP Members and Friends come together for this optional event. Ailee graduated with a degree in English, but will return to NMU to pursue an MPA and work as a Graduate Assistant in the Center for Student Enrichment.
