This is not my post but shared with permission from another local provider.Her words are so very true and might have spoken from my heart as well. I am a also a local provider….

Sadly the lack of child care is a problem locally, statewide, & nationwide.

If you want change, start with the state.
We have some of the lowest in home capacity (total children) in the United States.
They were working to increase in home ratios1-2kiddos possibly an extra exception for school age when they pandemic hit. The 1-2 child per license increase would immediate add over 4300 spot through out MI. If we were permitted 2-4 school age in addition….HUGE. I personally could add 4 full time spots TODAY!

Did you know we are limited to two infants per staff? That’s why there is a huge infant shortage. If you take 2 infants for $12hr (random numbers) & pay staff $13hr…You get the picture…

The time it takes to get licensed (3-9months for in home, 1-2yrs for a center). Getting staff cleared to work takes way to long 1-2 months Min.

Many of our rules are outdated. Others over rules over complicate things.

We are swamped with ever changing paperwork. It is a huge focus for the state.

Making a living & offering affordable childcare are not even possible right now. As a provider I struggle to pay a competitive wage, cover all expenses, & make a living. Did you know that most home providers make less then $25,000yr after expenses (most much less). Did you know home providers work 50-70hrs a week? Would you work those hours for $25,000yr?

Lastly, childcare has become all about “teaching” versus playing & socialize. (Did you know a center must have a daily learning plan for infants?) Our children are pushed to learn to much, to quickly. Children need to play, socialize, learn to problem solve & develop coping skills.
Recents studies show that early education (preschool) has no long term value & by the 3rd grade all children are at the same education level. Which makes me ask…Why are pushing our children?

I worry a lot about getting things wrong,
Everything I do takes twice as long.
Everyday is exhausting for me...
Looking through the fog of ADHD.
I'm often so misunderstood,
I would change in a heartbeat if I could.

I'm not defined by it, you see.
I'm sensitive, kind and lots of fun.
I'm blamed for things I haven't done.
