Time for a Part 2 with Connor Kamm!
Connor is nearing graduation and has great memories at his soon-to-be Alma Mater, especially when it comes to the friends he's made: āThe student population at NMU is great. I think the best way to describe it would be to say that there is someone for everyone, no matter who you are or what walks of life you come from. You will find friends somewhere.ā
It wasnāt all easy, like the practicals in Advanced Pipe Welding II, which challenged Connor in a multitude of ways. Connor was tasked with mostly independent work and had to put together brand new concepts in a short amount of time. With his background in plumbing, Connor was able to decipher the piping prints, but welding the fittings was a whole new ballgame. Slow and steady wins the race because not only did his spools come out great, theyāre also on display for everyone who comes into the lab to see!
Every grad has to answer the question, āWhat next?ā For Connor his options are many as he explores all of the opportunities out there. His interest in CAD and education spark ideas about Industrial Ed Tech, and traveling pipe welding has him pondering taking his skills on the road, maybe even owning his own business one day. With his talent, work ethic, and open mind, we have no doubt Connor will be doing big things.

Thereās some giant talent in the Welding lab š„
Our students have spent the year perfecting their craft and made a huge impact, aiding in projects for programs all over campus. While the work isnāt easy, the payoff is going to be enormous.

We would be remiss if we ended this academic year without shouting out soon-to-be Welding graduate and co-founder of the Welding Club, Connor Kamm.
Connor, hailing from Houghton, was still weighing his options for life after high school when a friendās tour of NMUās Welding Lab sparked his interest. Connor participated in the Presidential Scholars Competition and won the Kaye-Munson Scholarship, so with that and his girlfriend already set to attend NMU, the decision became a no-brainer - and now in a few short weeks Connor will be graduating with his Welding degree.
The majority of fun, challenging, odd projects come internally from the university, allowing students to explore other programs through the requests they receive. The most memorable for Connor include welding the NMU SAE Baja Team kart frame, a big wall for the NMU Engineering Technology Department/Industrial Tech students, and all the miscellaneous projects that the engineering and machining students drop by. āBeing able to pick up these things and learn my way through designing and building them has been huge. It's given me a whole other perspective on what I want and don't want to do with my future, along with giving me some experience that will give me a jump start in the industry.ā
Stay tuned for part two when we talk to Connor about what the future holds, his most difficult challenge in the program, and how NMU provides a space for everyone.
