Please join us in welcoming Dr. Jong In Lim to our department as an Instructor in Communication Studies!

Dr. Lim recently earned his Ph.D. in Communication from Michigan State University, where he received a 2026 Excellence-in-Teaching Citation. His award-winning research focuses on supportive communication, interpersonal relationships, health communication, and AI-mediated interaction.

Although he has an impressive research record, Dr. Lim says teaching is his greatest passion. He is committed to creating a classroom where students feel comfortable asking questions, learning from mistakes, and growing through the learning process.

When he's not teaching or conducting research, Dr. Lim enjoys exploring new places, trying local restaurants, cooking, listening to classical music, and playing the violin.

We can’t wait for you to meet him!

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Nyan Lynn to Northern Michigan University's Department of Communication and Media Studies!

We're excited to officially welcome Dr. Lynn as Journalism joins the CAMS Department, bringing our journalism, multimedia, and communication programs together under one roof.

Many of our students already know Dr. Lynn through his work with The North Wind and his journalism courses at NMU. Before joining the university, he spent more than 16 years as a reporter, editor, publisher, and investigative journalist in Myanmar, often reporting under pseudonyms during military rule. He was also a professor at the University of Kansas.

His teaching and research focus on investigative reporting, media freedom, journalistic autonomy, and the role of journalism in democracy. His recent scholarship examines media coverage of the Rohingya crisis and the challenges journalists face while reporting under political conflict and censorship.

We're thrilled to have Dr. Lynn as part of CAMS and look forward to the expertise, perspective, and mentorship he brings to our students and department. Welcome, Dr. Lynn!

Congratulations to Dr. Josh Ewalt on presenting at the 7th Biennial Philosophy of Communication Conference at Duquesne University!

His presentation, "Navigating the Anticipations of Life in Common: Form, Potentiality, and Communication Ethics," was part of this year's conference theme, "Rhetoric, Race, and Religion," which brought together scholars from around the world to explore the intersections of communication, ethics, identity, and social change.
