Everyone…. Meet Hannes. Hannes is the stroke seat of the German 8+. Hannes can pull a 5:53 2k, which is a 1:28 500m split.

This is Hannes erging for an hour and a half, 32 splits SLOWER than his 2k pace.

Also, the finish time of 1:30:20.4 makes me speculate he programmed the machine for “Just Row”. So if he wanted a drink he could take a drink, if he wanted to stand up and stretch he could stretch.

To go fast, you have to go slow. But don’t believe me, believe Hannes.

I’m really good at going slow. Now I know what brisket feels like 🥵🥵🥵

Woke up early so I could fit this in. 3x20 mins, don’t pay attention to rate, but focused on technique and power curve.

This right now is about 20-25 splits SLOWER (higher) than my 2k.

Make your slow days slow and make your hard days hard.

This morning at 6:00am it was 81 degrees at 90% humidity. Which got me thinking: Is our South Jersey Humidity the same as elevation training?

Same same.... but different. Both heat training and elevation training have many benefits, one does not mimic the other.

But, an argument can be made that humidity and heat exposure may be more practical for overall performance on race day.

Both altitude training and humidity training deliver long-term results and extreme physiological effects on the body, but can they be considered equivalent?

“Downhill Rowing”. Using the chair is great for a number of reasons.

1. Builds trust with my student that they won’t fall and smash their head
2. Forcefully have to pull yourself UP to the catch
3. Drive should be fastest aspect of the stroke and should accelerate in speed through progression

How cool! Rhesa came to me after just missing the podium of world indoor championships in 2020.

One year later, and 18+ seconds faster on her 2K, she took home bronze in the 2k and is now... the NEW... WORLD... CHAMPION... in the women's 500m for her age group!

I can give you the hammer, but you're going to have to be the one to swing it!

Low…. And (not so) slow.

A great test of fitness is 30 mins at 20 spm. No where to run, now where to hide. 600 strokes. My wife is amazed how high I can get my HR and yet the stroke rate so low.

🔑🔑🔑 keys to driving the split down at low rates:

1. Keep shoulders forward during the leg drive. Keep the weight on the FRONT of the handle

2. It’s heavy at the top. Isolate the legs, pressssss then swing. If you yam on it too hard at the top, you’ll either shoot the butt out, or open the back up too early

3. Arms LOCKED about on the drive. 30 mins of flexing your forearms at the catch will not end well

This is a great repeat workout. Do it maybe once a month, or every 45 days, and mark your improvement!

Congrats to one of my students, Rhesa! I have been working with Rhesa since May. Although our goal is to win world championships in February, to keep her motivated and feisty I give her challenges every month.

Well now, we are happy to share she holds the American Record for her age group in the 100m sprint. Much much MUCH more to come from Rhesa! Great work!

At 4:45am with drenching rain and a text chain with Colin Stewart we both said "eff it, let's go". Glad we did.

You can tell we were SUPER PUMPED at the beginning of the workout, but the rain blew away, winds died down for a little, which made for some primo conditions.

It was fun to get after it this AM.
