Professor Peter McHugh is a Ricardo Almeida black belt who has been teaching and training full-time at the RABJJ Association headquarters since 2008. Students of McHugh BJJ will experience world class martial arts in a safe, professional, and clean environment. We offer classes for all ages, and specialize in providing age appropriate curriculums. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is widely considered the most effective martial art for self defense, and will build confidence, increase focus and physical fitness, and teach respect, all in a fun and interesting environment! Our toughest testing cycle yet!

Over the last few months we’ve really raised the bar in every youth program: more challenging classes, higher energy, and for the first time, a program-specific skill assessment before promotion day.

It wasn’t easy.

Every kid on last night’s mat earned it. Four stripes, time in the belt, consistent attendance, and a one-on-one assessment with a coach where they showed us what they know.

A few needed a second try at their assessment. They went home, worked on it, came back, and got it. That’s exactly the point - and it’s one more thing to help them grow stronger.

We’re incredibly proud of every one of them!

Congrats to all of these awesome kids, and thank you to the parents who keep showing up alongside them.

Our NEW approach to Belt Testing 📝

There’s so much to learn in Jiu Jitsu! That’s part of what makes it so exciting — but it can also get overwhelming if you try to learn it all at once.

That’s why we break it into programs (Tiny Sharks, Little Sharks, Junior Sharks 1–3). Solid foundation first, then we build on it. It’s how we keep our kids BullyProof.

Belt testing is where that foundation gets checked.

Once a kid has earned 4 stripes and met the time and attendance requirements for their belt, they’re added to the assessment list.

In the two weeks before promotions, a coach assesses them during or after class. Each belt has its own assessment.

➡️

If there are a couple things to clean up, no problem — they have time to work on them and reassess before promotion day. Coaches are here to help!

Each assessment comes straight from the program’s curriculum, and focuses on the most important skills and concepts for that age and level - including a live training assessment.

➡️

Results are emailed to you (the parent) that same day.

➡️

Why we love it: a few minutes of a coach’s full attention, a chance to show how far they’ve come, and a little pressure to rise to.

Kids light up! And we’ve been beyond impressed with how well they’ve done.

We can see already that this is a huge addition to the youth program.

The power of Professor Tony’s beginner class🔥

It looks like Ellie is just having a ton of fun with her training partner (and she is).

BUT she’s also learning sone of the most important concepts and skills in Jiu Jitsu - how to take someone down, control them, and stay safe.

She’s learning real, effective, age-appropriate self defense skills.

She’s building confidence, resilience, and grit.

It’s just an added benefit that she’s surrounded by awesome classmates, world-class instructors, and it’s an absolute blast!
