FIRST LESSON IN OVER 2 YEARS!!!!!! 👀👀👀

Why was I literally sweating before taking this lesson?! It’s not that serious, Laurel!!!!

Had a fun time exploring different parts of my voice with - I tried to intentionally choose clips that were rough and raw because even voice teachers need voice teachers! And that’s the hill I’m dying on today! Excited to get back into lessons and continue my journey of singing in my 30s! 🫶🏼

This is how I approach it with my voice and with what I’M able to do! If this helps you, GREAT! If it doesn’t that’s ok too!

Anytime we play with the idea of “release” and singing with a “thinner belt” it’s really just playing with tensions and pressures and seeing what feels right for you! If it’s hard to control your volume on a specific note…take it down a few half steps and then work your way up.

Ok this was a perfect example of how scent can be used in your toolbox but just because you use one tool doesn’t mean that it can do EVERYTHING for you!

With scent AND light reminders to increase a thinner closure - was able to find this beautiful and free sound without having to press!

IT’S OK IF SOMETHING ISN’T WORKING IMMEDIATELY! Teachers! Use that intuition and your understanding of the student and just patiently work and explore! That’s the fun of it!

SCIENTIFIC VOCAL EXPERIMENT ALERT 🚨 WATCH TIL THE END! IT’S WORTH IT!

Singing is SO cool you guys! Today I experimented with using the “olfactory” sense to engage my brain in a new way to help with vocal fold coordination and efficiency!

Some fellow voice nerds like & make learning fun and exciting! They both inspired me to do this & to now use it in my vocal “toolbox!”

Tell me if you were able to hear or see the difference when I sang the clips at the end!!!

The goal isn’t no breathy sound at all! The goal is to increase perceived resonance, use the air we have efficiently, and find a little bit more vocal fold closure!

With Emma, we were working on keeping lines even in volume and making sure that the lower notes weren’t as heavy so she could transition more seamlessly! With awareness in her nasopharyngeal space & increased awareness of her sound (by use of her hand or the wall) now she can use less air and use more vocal fold closure! The straw phonation increased back pressure to close the vocal folds a little bit more & taught her what that was supposed to feel like. Remember, it’s not about NO air…it’s about how to use what we have more efficiently!

Teaching is not a one size fits all & this specific technique helped her and has helped in the past!

Play with different resonant spots & use different kind of amplification techniques to see what you notice about how your singing changes!
