Last week, more than 80 high school students from 19 rural Mississippi school districts gathered at Mississippi State University for the Global Teaching Project's 10th Annual Advanced STEM Summer Preparatory Program.

The week-long experience brought together talented students, outstanding educators, and dedicated teaching assistants from universities across the country to help students build the confidence, skills, and academic foundation needed to succeed in AP STEM coursework this fall.

We're grateful to our partners at Mississippi State University and to the educators, teaching assistants, and supporters who make opportunities like this possible. Together, we're helping expand access to rigorous STEM education for students in rural and underserved communities.

We're honored to see the impact of rural STEM education highlighted in Yale's recent feature, "Charting Yale's Impact on American Life, One State at a Time."

The article showcases how partnerships between educators, schools, and institutions can create meaningful opportunities for students in communities that have historically had limited access to advanced academic resources. It specifically highlights STEM education bootcamps in the Mississippi Delta—work that reflects the power of investing in teachers and expanding opportunities for students regardless of geography.

Teaching Assistant Spotlight: Ryan Steele

University of Virginia | AP Computer Science Principles

Ryan Steele, originally from New York, is a senior at the University of Virginia pursuing a B.S. in Computer Science with a minor in Global Sustainability. Now in her second year with the Global Teaching Project, she is excited to support students as a Teaching Assistant for AP Computer Science Principles.

Ryan is passionate about the intersection of technology and creativity, recognizing how computer science and design work together to create meaningful, impactful solutions.

Outside of academics, Ryan enjoys photography, traveling, and playing guitar—creative outlets that reflect her curiosity and artistic perspective.

About the Academic Focus – Computer Science
Computer science equips students with the skills to understand and shape the digital world—from programming and data analysis to innovation and design. Through hands-on learning and logical reasoning, students gain tools that open doors across nearly every industry.

Our TAs:
The Global Teaching Project partners with college students from universities including Yale, Harvard, UVA, Ole Miss, Dartmouth, Georgia Tech, Mississippi State, Howard University, Washington University in St. Louis, and the University of Virginia to support Mississippi students through personalized STEM tutoring. Our Teaching Assistants serve as both academic guides and role models—helping students succeed in rigorous coursework while expanding their sense of what’s possible.

We’re grateful to Ryan for her creativity, her commitment to her students, and the perspective she brings to the classroom.

Teaching Assistant Spotlight: Eliana Bonbrest

Harvard College | AP Biology Tutoring

Eliana Bonbrest, a senior at Harvard College studying Biomedical Engineering with a minor in Education, supports Mississippi high school students as a Teaching Assistant with the Global Teaching Project—helping them navigate AP Biology and build confidence in their scientific thinking.
This is Eliana’s first year with the program. Her academic interests sit at the intersection of engineering, biology, and education, shaping the way she approaches both learning and mentorship.

Outside the classroom, Eliana enjoys running, hiking, and baking—finding balance between rigorous academics and time spent outdoors or creating something from scratch.
