This week sent the Vet Science and Horticulture teams to Virginia Tech for state competitions hosted by Virginia FFA. They completed for 3 days using skills learned in their agriculture and horticulture classes. They represented their school well. We have enjoyed working with them over the past year and very much appreciate the time and effort they have invested into these competitions. The results are:
Vet Science- 9th place out of 34 teams
Floriculture- 6th place out of 36 teams
Nursery/Landscaping- 10th place out of 17 teams

Spring Plant Sale begins today! Hanging baskets, bedding plants, herbs, and vegetables. Bring friends and family from 4-6 each weekday afternoon until everything sells out. Friday April 17th Veterinary Science and Floriculture students traveled to Wytheville Community College for Appalachian Area FFA - Virginia FFA Association competitions with other schools west of Blacksburg. Around 400 students attended for a morning of events, a bbq lunch and awards during the afternoon. Everyone had a wonderful time meeting others from across the region. The event was sponsored by the Virginia FFA. The scores were counted with the following results:

Floriculture Team- 1st place overall team 🥇
Spencer P. - 1st place individual!
Lily A. - 2nd place individual
Kassi B. - 3rd place individual

Vet Science Team - 2nd place overall team 🥈
Madilyn B. - 1st place individual!
McKinley H. - 3rd place individual

This contest season has been challenging with more snow(and ice) than normal and all the normal stomach bugs that travel around. Working with this wonderful group is always exciting! They come in excited to develop skills and gain knowledge everyday. Possibly the coolest thing about them is how well they work together as a team. Most of these pictured will advance to the state competition at Virginia Tech in mid-June. Finally we want to wish our lone senior this year Madilyn all the luck as she prepares for her final event this summer (Vet Science).

When you see poinsettias and wreaths show up you know that the holiday season is here! Come get yours to decorate or give as a gift. Single poinsettias-$5, triples-$20, quads-$25. They will be wrapped with foil, ribbon & bow. Need a larger order for an event or church? Call the school and place an order. Wreaths are made to order as long as there is material to assemble them. Tell a friend too!

Early contest season preparations are underway. Today our veterinary science team traveled to Carroll County for their annual stockmen’s contest. They identified feed rations, meats, breeds, equipment, judged sheep & cattle and completed an animal science exam. Teams from across southwest Virginia were invited to this wonderful event. We also enjoyed traveling to the event with Chilhowie High School FFA. We are looking forward to another exciting year working with these students! Almost forgot-they placed 2nd in today’s event!

The 98th National FFA Organization Convention is in the books. We have all safely returned home with good memories, new friends and a little hardware. Our Nursery/Landscape Team earned the privilege of representing Virginia FFA by winning the state championship in June. They competed against the other 49 state champion winning teams to determine the national champions.

The team finished with a silver rating and placed 17th overall! Individually:
Allie - gold rating
Spencer - gold rating
Layla - silver rating
McKinley - bronze rating

Each year the national convention draws about 80,000 students to Indiana for a weeks worth of activities and competitions. The amount of time preparing for state and national competitions is measured in months and years not days or weeks. The full day contest is a complete examination of their ability to identify over 150 plants/pests/diseases/disorders, landscape estimating mathematics, propagate plants, verbal customer service skills, drainage installation, plant layout/mapping, plant installation, site grading, topography surveying, power equipment maintenance/operation and a very difficult written exam.

Visited the Harland Sanders Cafe(original KFC) in Corbin KY
Toured the home of President Benjamin Harrison
Explored the nationals largest agriculture college and career fair
Toured the nation's largest AgriTourism site of FairOaks Farm
Visited the Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden
Enjoyed an FFA student only rodeo and concert by Ella Langley.

We celebrate Allie finishing her FFA experience and wish her continued success as she continues agriculture education through the horticulture and business program at Virginia Highlands Community College. We are so proud of our veterinary science and horticulture science students and look forward to another year working with them and adding new faces to the herd.

The Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County, Inc. celebrated its annual Town & Country Dinner on Thursday, September 4th. The dinner is a tradition honoring agriculture and those who support it throughout the county. This year, attendees were joined by Attorney General Jason Miyares, who spoke on the importance of agriculture as Virginia’s major economic driver. He expressed his deep appreciation for farmers and the work they do.
For the first time since 2019 Marion had the FFA Member of the Year! Allie Totten was selected due to her heavy involvement in FFA and agriculture education. She has competed at both state and national level horticulture contests, earning top honors including the 2025 Virginia Nursery/Landscape Champion and 2024 Virginia Floriculture Champion. She will lead Marion FFA's Nursery/Landscape team later this month at the national championships in Indianapolis.
Both Virginia Attorney General Jason Miyares and former Virginia Governor George Allen were in attendance to fellowship with everyone that attended.

Fall Mums have sold out! Thank you for the overwhelming support of the program. Christmas wreaths and almost 1000 poinsettias will be available at Thanksgiving.
