There is a pencil factory in Bavaria that has been running since 1761.

Kaspar Faber started it in a village outside Nuremberg. Nine generations later the same family is still running it. It is the oldest pencil maker in the world, older than the United States, older than the French Revolution.

And it is the reason your pencils are the way they are. In the 1800s Lothar von Faber decided pencils needed rules: one standard length, one standard thickness, and a system of hardness grades so that an H was always an H and a B was always a B. The rest of the world simply copied him. That little HB stamped on the pencil in your kitchen drawer is following a German rulebook from more than 180 years ago.

They still turn out over two billion pencils a year.
