Graphic Design is everywhere we look. It surrounds us on a daily basis. From t-shirts and coffee cups, to billboards and cereal packaging, design helps communicate a message!

Graphic design is about problem-solving. It uses visual designs to communicate those solutions. Our program trains students in the necessary theory, technology, and soft skills needed to be able to solve and visualize these communication problems!

The Learn and Grow Scholarship Program, which begins immediately, will eliminate tuition and fees for the 2021-2022 academic year for all current, returning and new curriculum students. It applies to everyone who takes at least six credit hours of instruction and follows the necessary admission steps.

McDowell Technical Community College introduced a new program this week which effectively eliminates one of the most significant barriers to college attendance: cost.

Just a quick final reminder that Fall Registration is currently underway, August 1st – 14th, for our creative programs. Classes will begin August 15th.

Both the Photography and Graphics programs at McDowell Technical College offer Certificate (one year) and Associates (two-year) degrees, while some students simply sign up for individual classes that interest them.

Many of the classes are hybrids, which means that they are part face-to-face and part online. The two main introductory classes for photography, for example, Fundamentals and Intro to Digital Imaging, meet only once per week on Wednesdays. In addition to many hybrid classes, the graphics program offers all of its Certificate courses online.

We offer small hands-on classes, taught by working professionals. We are passionate about what we do and enjoy sharing our knowledge with students who are excited about learning either photography or graphic design.

Art Show on Display Through November 13, 2015

McDowell Technical Community College is currently hosting the 39th Annual Inmate Art Show for the NC Department of Public Safety, Division of Adult Correction and Juvenile Justice/Prisons. Officials from the Department of Corrections hung the show on Tuesday, November 3rd, and works will be on display through approximately November 13th.

Most of the pieces in the show fall into three categories: painting, drawing and mixed media. MTCC Faculty who teach art, graphics and photography will be judging the displayed works during the next week, with awards for first through fifth place, as well as Best of Show and People's Choice. No monetary awards will be given, but certificates will be distributed to the winners.

The public is invited to view the show by visiting McDowell Technical Community College from 8 am to 8:30 pm Monday through Friday. The show is being housed in the Cedar Building, also known as the Administration Building, on the college's main campus at 54 College Drive in Marion, NC.

Sorry for getting this up late. I talked to a couple of students and we're going to do a NCAA Tournament bracket pick 'em this year. You have to have your picks locked in by NOON tomorrow, 3/21 (Thursday). Even if you're not a big sports or basketball fan, feel free to pick a bracket just for fun. You'll probably do better than us "experts." Invite anyone you want to join as well. Alumni, friends of the program, etc. are all welcome!

And just to tie it into graphics, the scoring system is the Fibonacci scale (2-3-5-8-13-21) for points per round of correct picks. Remember your grids and golden ratio?

Click the link above to join my group. Be sure to make your picks by tip-off on Thursday, March 21. Good luck!
