What is deficit spending, and why does it matter?

Deficit spending happens when a district spends more than it brings in during a given year. Like many districts across Ohio, Pleasant Local's financial forecast shows this could happen in future years if current trends continue.

The good news?

We're planning ahead. By identifying this early, our district can make informed decisions now to maintain long-term financial stability for our students and community.

Spartan spirit took the field! ⚾

Pleasant Board of Education President Vicki Kimmel suited up in full Spartan gear for the Marion County Board of Developmental Disabilities Celebrity Kickball Game this week. Playing as "KICKtoria SpartaKICKus KICK-mel," she brought the cape, the helmet, and plenty of Spartan pride.

She was joined by friendly rivals Brian "Murph" Murphy of Marion City Schools and Tad Douce of River Valley. It was a great night of fun for a great cause, and we love seeing our Marion County schools come together.

Thank you for representing the Spartans, Vicki!

Congratulations to senior Josiah Kramp, who has been named a National Merit Semifinalist! 🎉

Josiah earned this national recognition through his outstanding performance on the PSAT during his junior year. Semifinalist status is reserved for students who score in the top 0.5% of test takers in the state of Ohio, which makes this a remarkable accomplishment.

We are so proud of you, Josiah, and can't wait to see what comes next!

How do rising costs impact schools?

Like many families, schools across Ohio, including here at Pleasant Local, are feeling the impact of rising costs.

Even without adding anything new, expenses go up each year. Salaries and benefits make up the largest part of the budget, and those costs increase over time due to contracts, health insurance, and required contributions.

It is similar to a household where groceries, utilities, and insurance keep getting more expensive, even if your routine stays the same.

At the same time, state funding is not keeping pace and is becoming more limited due to changes at the state level, which adds additional pressure on school budgets.

As these pressures continue, the district remains focused on balancing the needs of students with responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars.
