🤟October is AAC Awareness Month! 🗣️✨
At Marion Elementary, we celebrate the fact that everyone has a voice, even if they don’t use spoken words to communicate!
Some of our amazing students use Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC), such as picture boards, communication apps on iPads, speech-generating devices, or gestures, to share their brilliant ideas, humor, and feelings every single day!
Our school Speech-Language Pathologist, Mrs.Norton, helps support our students by building communication skills and empowering them to express themselves in the ways that work best for them. 💙
Want to be a rockstar communication partner this month? 🎸 Remember these three simple steps:
1️⃣ Say Hi! Invite friends who use AAC to play at recess or sit with you at lunch.
2️⃣ Give Time! Finding words on a device or communication board takes time. Be patient and give your friend time to respond. ⏳
3️⃣ Talk to the Person! Speak directly to your friend, listen to their message, and remember that communication is about connection, not just words!
