✨ We are thrilled to welcome Mr. Michael Flanagin to the podium as Guest Conductor for the Mississinewa Valley Band! ✨
Michael Flanagin brings over 30 years of experience as a music educator to Indiana Wesleyan University. He has served as a music education professor within the IWU Division of Music since 2001. He directs the IWU Wind Ensemble, assists with the Marching Wildcats, and teaches private instruction in French horn, courses in computer applications, conducting, and supervises student teachers and practicum students. He served as chair of the IWU Division of Music from 2016–2023. Flanagin’s ensembles have been featured at the Indiana Music Educators Conventions in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. They have performed in 28 different states and recorded five compact discs.
Prior to his service at IWU, Flanagin taught instrumental and vocal music in secondary public schools in Illinois and Indiana. He received his Bachelor of Music Education degree from Indiana University and his Master of Arts in Music degree from Ball State University. He resides in Marion, Indiana with his wife, Sarah. He has two sons and daughters-in-law that are all graduates of IWU. Sarah and Michael are now enjoying being grandparents.
Professor Flanagin’s passions are in the area of music teacher education and seeing music bring joy to students throughout the world. Flanagin has led 8 trips to Zambia to serve with students in the areas of music education and music therapy. As Division Chair he has helped to start the IWU Marching Wildcats and worked to navigate the division through the reaccreditation process.
