Venture Biology students traded the classroom for the outdoors during a recent visit to F.W. Kent Park. After researching the park and the lake restoration project in class, students explored the lake by kayak, spent time fishing, and learned about conservation staff’s efforts to reduce algae blues caused by excess phosphorus and nitrates. A great hands-on opportunity for students to better understand the connection between water, quality, agriculture, and the importance of protecting Iowa‘s natural resources.

Venture Biology students hear from Frances Owen of Johnson County Conservation. Frances shared about the important role that native prairies and pollinators play in Iowa’s environment, including their impact on biodiversity, water, quality, and healthy ecosystems.

Venture Creative Writing students found inspiration beyond the classroom during a visit to the Cedar Rapids Museum of Art and the Grant Wood Studio. Students explored how visual art can spark storytelling, using pieces from the collections as prompts for their own creative writing.

Students in Venture Biomedical Science got hands on experience with blood typing thanks to a visit from Krista at ImpactLife. A great opportunity to connect classroom learning to real-world lab skills!

Venture Civics students had the opportunity to hear from a panel of local legal professionals, including a judge, attorney, sheriff’s deputy, police officer, victim, advocate, and parole officer. The panelists shared real world insights into their careers, daily responsibilities, and the impact of their work within the justice system.

Venture Earth Science students visited the Indian Creek Nature Center to explore sustainability in action! Students learned how the facility is completely solar powered, uses geothermal energy, and was designed for zero water runoff. Students also got to see the center’s resident wild turkey (if you look closely you can see him in the left window of the first photo).
