I recently had the privilege to be one of the judges for the LM High School Design, Engineering & Materials Department's Engineering Design & Development Senior Capstone projects.

I have been asked to participate the last few years and it's always so amazing to me to see what our students are capable of. This year's three groups solved real-world problems from improving a lawn mower blade, redesigning a music stand, and creating a device that continuously monitors and reports chemical levels in residential pools to increase safety.

All three groups showed amazing ingenuity and design and all have bright future ahead of them. The students at graduation this Sunday wearing the teal PLTW stole completed this project and met all the requirements for Project Lead the Way.

Congratulations to each group - I can't wait to see what you do next!

At our last board meeting, we approved the FY27 certified budget and tax levy.

Here are a few key takeaways from the presentation:

✔️ Tax Levy Rate Holds Steady
For the third year in a row, the levy rate remains at $17.99.

✔️ Lower Impact for Homeowners
For a $200,000 home, this results in a $104.32 decrease per year.

✔️ Where the Money Goes
The majority of the General Fund supports instruction, with over 80% invested in staff—a reflection of the district’s commitment to students and classrooms.

✔️ How Linn-Mar Compares
Linn-Mar remains competitive with neighboring districts—and importantly, does not include an income surtax, unlike many others.

✔️ Who Controls the Levy?

44% — State of Iowa
37% — School Board
18% — Voter-approved

With state funding levels around 2% and inflation closer to 3%, the district continues to take a conservative, responsible approach to budgeting, while maintaining a path to support annual staff increases.

The next meeting of the Linn-Mar School Board is Monday, April 27 at 5 pm.

This is also the second public hearing on the tax levy where we will hear public comment. The proposed levy maintains the current tax rate.
