Sydney's Tutoring Service

Sydney's Tutoring Service Welcome to Sydney's Tutoring Service. Summer registration is currently open! I work with students to overcome their academic struggles in fun and engaging ways.

Summer tutoring will help students to fill gaps as well as prevent summer regression. I am Sydney Swoish. I am an alumnus of Sippican School and Old Rochester Regional High School. I graduated from Bridgewater State University in 2020 with my special education and English bachelor's degrees. During COVID I acquired my general education license as well. When I began working at Sippican School in 20

21 I had the opportunity to be a long-term substitute in 4th grade for half of the year. When I finished I was placed as a one on one for the most wonderful boy with Autism. During this time I earned my Registered Behavioral Technician certification. I was lucky enough to work with this student from 3rd to 5th grade. This year (2024) I earned my master's as a reading specialist from Lesley Univesity. Next school year I hope to have a job as a general education or special education teacher. This summer I look forward to working with some old students and meeting some new ones. When working with students I go above and beyond to create individualized lessons that connect with student's interests. This makes lessons engaging and effective for student progress. Please reach out with any questions. I hope to hear from you soon!

On the day we talked about finding food students planted seeds. We observed the seeds growing and students took them home on the last day. Each day students were excited to see how much their plant had grown.

Each day our adventure started with an introduction to the storyline that I wrote. Then I added a story or article (at the student's reading level) related to the challenge. We then complete the worksheet that goes with the project. When applicable students share their ideas.

For our class chapter book, we are enjoying "Stranded" by Jeff Probst. This story is perfect for our class because it is about a family that gets into a shipwreck. After a storm, the four kids end up on a deserted island and have to figure out how to provide for themselves. Students are enjoying this captivating book and getting ideas for their own adventures.

During math, we started off by practicing skip counting and multiplication facts. After the warm-up, we completed a math challenge that went along with the story.

During phonics time we did Heggerty, sound practice, sight word reading, review deck reading, and spelling.

One of the ways that I create a kind and inclusive community is by setting clear expectations. On the first day of school, we talk about classroom expectations. This year I also shared a video about kind comments. The video teaches us that if someone can't fix something in 30 seconds you should not say. I also like to begin each day with a positive note.

My summer school class has been so much fun this year! All of my students loved the mix of project-based learning and hands-on STEAM activities. If you are interested I will be posting about some of the cool activities we have done. If you have 3rd or 4th graders at ORR I would love to work with them next summer. The official name for my course is "Island Adventure".

If you're a teacher who wants to do this project look at the link from Digital Divide and Conquer on TPT. They have a bunch of amazing products.
