FROM COLLEGE TO THE TRADES: How Haven Holmes Built Her Own Path
Meet Haven Holmes. At just 20 years old, this Chillicothe, Ohio native is proving that the road to success isn’t always a straight line.
After graduating from Chillicothe High School in 2024, Haven attended Norfolk State University as a Biology major. Juggling full-time classes, a part-time job, and a social life quickly taught her how demanding college life can be. Realizing she wanted a more sustainable, hands-on path to build her future, she decided to pivot. Her search led her straight to Job Corps, and she signed up the very same day as her tour.
Finding Her True Calling
Haven initially started in welding, but realized her ambitions were even bigger. She wanted to be a "jack of all trades" with the skills to run her own companies one day. That’s when she discovered Facility Maintenance—a comprehensive field covering plumbing, carpentry, landscaping, HVAC, and electrical work.
Haven didn’t just participate; she excelled:
Breaking Barriers: Out of only three students selected for an exclusive online HVAC program, Haven was the only female in the class.
Leading the Way: Her work ethic quickly earned her the role of Trade Foreman.
Certified and Ready: Within months, she secured both her OSHA 10 and N.A.T.E. certifications.
Next Stop: Miami, Florida
Now, just seven months into her Job Corps journey, Haven’s dedication has unlocked a life-changing opportunity. She has been accepted into the highly competitive Advanced Electrical Technician training program in Miami, Florida—earning one of only 12 coveted spots available.
"Many times I wanted to quit, but I didn’t, and now I’m enjoying the fruit of my labor," Haven says. "My work is far from done, but I am beyond proud of my progress."
We are incredibly proud of Haven’s resilience, drive, and leadership. Join us in celebrating her success in the comments below!
