As part of my ongoing Trade Shadowing Initiative, I continue to spend time in each of our Career Technical Training programs to gain a firsthand understanding of the skills our students are learning and the quality instruction being delivered at the Cincinnati Job Corps Center.
During my recent shadowing experience in the Welding trade, I had the opportunity to participate in training sessions on track torch and flat T-joint welding. These activities provided valuable insights into the technical precision, attention to detail, and safety practices required for success in the industry.
🔥 Track Torch Welding: This exercise demonstrated the importance of proper equipment setup, measurement, and consistency in producing accurate cuts. Students learned how automated systems improve efficiency while maintaining strict quality standards.
👩‍🏭 Flat T-Joint Welding: As one of the fundamental welding positions used throughout the industry, this required careful technique, proper placement, and an understanding of how to achieve strong, clean welds. It was impressive to observe the students applying their classroom knowledge in a hands-on environment.
What stood out most was the students' intense focus on safety, craftsmanship, and continuous improvement. A huge shoutout to our Welding instructor for providing excellent guidance and coaching throughout the training, ensuring students understand both the "how" and the "why" behind quality work.
Each trade shadowing experience reinforces my appreciation for the dedication of our instructors and the determination of our students. The Welding program continues to provide valuable, industry-relevant training that prepares our students for successful careers in the skilled trades!
Respectfully,
Yelvis Parker

FROM COLLEGE TO THE TRADES: How Haven Holmes Built Her Own Path

Meet Haven Holmes. At just 20 years old, this Chillicothe, Ohio native is proving that the road to success isn’t always a straight line.

After graduating from Chillicothe High School in 2024, Haven attended Norfolk State University as a Biology major. Juggling full-time classes, a part-time job, and a social life quickly taught her how demanding college life can be. Realizing she wanted a more sustainable, hands-on path to build her future, she decided to pivot. Her search led her straight to Job Corps, and she signed up the very same day as her tour.

Finding Her True Calling

Haven initially started in welding, but realized her ambitions were even bigger. She wanted to be a "jack of all trades" with the skills to run her own companies one day. That’s when she discovered Facility Maintenance—a comprehensive field covering plumbing, carpentry, landscaping, HVAC, and electrical work.

Haven didn’t just participate; she excelled:

Breaking Barriers: Out of only three students selected for an exclusive online HVAC program, Haven was the only female in the class.

Leading the Way: Her work ethic quickly earned her the role of Trade Foreman.

Certified and Ready: Within months, she secured both her OSHA 10 and N.A.T.E. certifications.

Next Stop: Miami, Florida

Now, just seven months into her Job Corps journey, Haven’s dedication has unlocked a life-changing opportunity. She has been accepted into the highly competitive Advanced Electrical Technician training program in Miami, Florida—earning one of only 12 coveted spots available.

"Many times I wanted to quit, but I didn’t, and now I’m enjoying the fruit of my labor," Haven says. "My work is far from done, but I am beyond proud of my progress."

We are incredibly proud of Haven’s resilience, drive, and leadership. Join us in celebrating her success in the comments below!

Team,

As part of my ongoing Trade Shadowing Initiative, I continue to spend time in each of our Career Technical Training programs to understand the student learning experience better and observe the quality of instruction across the Cincinnati Job Corps Center.

On Tuesday, March 17, 2026, I had the opportunity to shadow our Culinary Arts program during a particularly exciting and meaningful day for the trade.

During my time in the kitchen, I focused on building foundational skills essential to the culinary profession. I learned basic culinary and food service vocabulary, reviewed different types of sauces, practiced properly sanitizing a workstation before use, and received instruction on proper knife-handling techniques. These core skills are critical to ensuring safety, consistency, and professionalism in any food service environment.

In addition to the hands-on learning, this day also marked the grand opening of our Urban Deli — an exciting new initiative within the Culinary Arts program. Through this effort, students will prepare approximately 75 deli sandwiches daily, providing an additional lunch option for students during both lunch periods. This is a great example of real-world, production-based training that allows students to develop speed, efficiency, teamwork, and customer service skills in a live setting.

I was impressed by the organization, energy, and pride demonstrated by the Culinary Arts students and staff. The launch of the Urban Deli reflects innovation, student engagement, and a commitment to enhancing both training opportunities and the overall student experience on campus.

Each trade shadowing experience continues to reinforce the strength of our programs and the dedication of our instructors and students. I look forward to continuing this initiative and highlighting the outstanding work being done across all trades.

Building Stronger Futures with Local 472!
On April 30th, our Construction students got an inside look at the world of professional craftsmanship! Representatives from the IKORCC Local 472 Carpenters and Millwrights Union visited our campus to share the incredible opportunities waiting for skilled tradespeople.

Earn While You Learn!
The highlight of the day was the union’s respected apprenticeship model. Students learned how they can combine their classroom knowledge with paid on-the-job training in high-skill areas like:

Carpentry & Millwright Work

Welding & Advanced Technologies

Blueprint Reading & Rigging

OSHA Safety & Scaffolding

More Than Just a Job
The energy in the room was fantastic as students dove into the details of what a union career really offers. From wage progression and healthcare benefits to pension opportunities and top-tier job placement support, it was clear that this path is about building a lifelong career.

A Partnership That Works
Our students were incredibly engaged, asking great questions about entry requirements and how to climb the ladder within the trades. This session did more than just provide information—it reinforced the value of professional craftsmanship and motivated our team to strive for excellence.

We are so grateful for our long-standing partnership with IKORCC Local 472. Thank you for continuing to provide our students with direct access to industry pros and clear pathways to success!

Lighting Up the Future: Solar Energy at Job Corps!
On April 29th, the future of renewable energy took center stage right here on campus! Our Construction students sat down with representatives from the Solar Energy Solutions Apprenticeship Program for an inspiring look at the booming world of solar installation.

Powering Up Career Paths
The session was packed with high-energy insights into the green energy sector. Students explored incredible opportunities, including:

Paid Apprenticeships: Earning while learning the ropes.

Skill Development: Gaining technical expertise and industry-standard certifications.

Long-Term Growth: Mapping out career pathways in a high-demand, sustainable field.

Engagement & Inspiration
Our students didn't just listen—they leaned in! The room was buzzing with questions about entry requirements, competitive wages, and what it’s really like to work on the front lines of solar technology. Presenters shared essential tips on workforce expectations, emphasizing how professionalism and technical skill are the keys to success.

Why It Matters
This event was a perfect bridge between the classroom and the real world. By connecting their current construction training to the renewable energy sector, students left feeling motivated to pursue advanced certifications and think big about their professional futures.

We are so proud to strengthen our industry partnerships and bring these incredible networking opportunities directly to our students. The future is looking bright!
