Fresh apples from Ellijay were a big hit!

Thanks to the generosity of a special donor, MUST worked with our partners at Marietta City Schools to provide fresh, healthy apples to more than 4,000 students and their families. Apples were distributed at Sawyer Road, Lockheed and Dunleith elementary schools, as well as Marietta High School. Students at Park Street and Hickory Hills elementary schools also received apples in their Blessing Backpacks for the long weekend.

We are grateful for this generous gift and the opportunity to provide fresh, nutritious food to students and families in our community. Thank you for helping MUST serve our neighbors in need!

The Marietta City Schools Board of Education recently recognized the Chi Gamma Gamma Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. for its longstanding mentorship and support of Marietta City Schools students and families.

For the past five years, chapter members have mentored male students at Marietta Middle School and, for the past three years, fifth-grade boys at Sawyer Road Elementary an IB PYP Academy. The chapter has also sponsored two-day college tours for 35 students, with visits to Georgia Tech, Kennesaw State University, Chattahoochee Technical College, and institutions within the Atlanta University Center.

Students have gained exposure to college and career opportunities through STEM workshops, entrepreneurship sessions, etiquette training, and conversations with campus leaders. Chapter members also support MCS families with food and holiday meals, provide shoes to students, assist at schools, and award scholarships to graduating seniors.

We thank the Chi Gamma Gamma Chapter for its continued mentorship, service, and investment in Marietta students.

The Marietta City Schools Board of Education recently recognized Mary Groves as she retired after 36 years of dedicated service to Club 3:30, one of Georgia’s longest-running after-school programs.

Club 3:30 serves about 30 MCS students—primarily from Hickory Hills Elementary School—each week at FPC Marietta, providing homework help, mentorship, and individualized support. Over the years, the program has helped students grow from kindergarteners new to English and American culture to graduates enrolled at universities such as Notre Dame.

After more than three decades, Mary’s impact can be seen in generations of Marietta students and families. We thank Mary for her remarkable dedication and years of service to Marietta students!

Jordan Southerland, the former all-state high-jumper from Marietta High School, dazzled the hometown crowd at Overtime Elite Arena at Atlantic Station by clearing a six-foot track-and-field high jump bar while throwing one down — his body practically horizontal — and landing on the crash mat with bragging rights and $50,000.

“That was a dunk I always wanted to put on the main stage,” says Southerland. “It’s an ode to my late (MHS) track coach, James ‘Friday’ Richards."

Southerland credits Coach Richards with giving his young athleticism direction in track and field after Southerland was cut from the basketball team. The professional dunker says Richards’ training led directly to Southerland’s distinctive one-foot launch technique, which has brought him much success in the fledgling Dunkman league.

Jordan Southerland didn’t win the Dunkman World Championship on Tuesday in Atlanta; that title and the $500,000 prize went to 21-year-old Cam Hazzard. But Southerland did set the bar when it came to the Dunk of the Night — literally.
