The trails are now clear enough that (hopefully) the mower will be able to get in, but that might have to wait until things dry out a bit. In the meantime, check out these photos;

It's finally drying out enough to get back into the station. Thanks to Marietta Township, the big tree blocking the road has been removed. The culvert has been cleared enough to be functional and held up well during the flooding (the flooding actually carried away some of the blockage). There are still trees down on the access road to the station but after some work today it's possible to hike in without having to go around any downed trees. Still a bit away from clearing enough to get the mower in, but the station is open. Beware that the road to the gate and the small parking lot at the gate are very muddy; best to park across the County road at the parking lot for the covered bridge.

A tornado touched down on Tuesday, July 21st 2026 about 1/2 mile north of the field station. We did an extensive evaluation today and are happy to report that there is little major damage, however there are several large trees down, one across the access road before the gate and others on the road to the station itself (not to mention trees down across the trails at a number of points). It's going to take a while to cut those out, and we won't be able to mow the trails (which really need it) until we've cleared several large trees off several key points.

Last Friday (March 6, 2026) it was just a little wet at the Beiser. Our Little Muskingum River came up a good bit flooding the road into the field station. Our road runs across the property of 3 great neighbors who allowed us to put the road across their land, and it was that part of the road that was underwater. Most of the station itself is well above flood stage, but of course if you can't get there (without a boat) then it's hard to go hiking. Aside from limiting access a few times a year, the flooding also comes with a lot of silt. Our once pristine gravel driveway is now buried under inches of silt and overgrown with grass; not a huge problem for access but it can get a bit muddy. Still, we lover our 1,200 or so feet of bank along the river, despite the occasional dunking.
