The largest number of Americans born in a single year arrived on campus in the autumn of 2025, and now a falloff is looming.

College enrollments are forecast to drop 13% by 2041, according to the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education. In some parts of the country—especially the Midwest and the Northeast—the declines have already begun.

You would think a shrinking pool of students would automatically make it easier to get into college. But that won’t necessarily be true everywhere, especially at the most competitive schools, higher-education analysts say.

Applicant Toolkit

Early Decision conversations usually focus on admission rates. But the more revealing number on the Common Data Set is the share of the freshman class already filled before regular decision applications are even read.

At many selective schools, ED isn't a small advantage lane; it's where most of the class gets built.

Filling 60%+ of the class through ED (2024–25 CDS):

Davidson — 69%

Emory — 68%

Middlebury — 68%

Bucknell — 67%

Claremont McKenna — 67%

Lehigh — 66%

WashU — 66%

Grinnell — 65%

Bates — 63%

Holy Cross — 62%

Tulane — 62%

Reserving most seats for RD:

UVA — 31%

Case Western — 18%

College of Charleston — 18%

Howard — 6%

Quinnipiac — 6%

UVA is a useful contrast. A student applying RD there competes for about 69% of the class. At Davidson, an RD applicant competes for 31%.
