This one was a fun one for our 1st and 2nd graders: We call our clock friends “Shorty” (in a Brooklyn accent—he’s a pushy guy who demands to be first all the time—who acts as our hour hand), and “Tall Man” (in a proper British accent—he’s a much more polite and knowledgeable since he can count by 5s—who acts as our minute hand). The learners love it when we do voices. Good thing we’re actors. 😅😂⏰🎭

Earlier this year I pulled this kid out of our town's highest rated elementary school because it just wasn't a great fit. He was performing poorly in class because he would already finish his worksheets as the teacher finished passing them out and explaining it to all 34 children in his class.

He would get bored and start to doodle on his finished assignment. Time would tick by and soon the whole page was covered in his doodles and comics. Originally, every answer had been correct, but because the teacher could no longer see the answers through his drawings, she was giving him failing grades.

I asked if he could just have a notebook he could keep in his desk for just this purpose to which the teacher responded, "No. We don't have the extra room in the kids' desks. He's just going to have to sit there quietly with his hands folded and his feet on the floor until his classmates are finished."

WHAT?!?!?

What on earth are we training these kids to do? Especially if they are originally on-task and they are mastering the concepts? Are we just raising generation upon generation of factory-workers and system-/procedure-followers?!?...We do need those, but honestly, not every kid is born to be one. This kid was born to break away and to write his own story.

Yes, there are some necessary parameters and metrics, but at Proveni School, we also choose to follow the instincts and interests of the child--we allow and ENCOURAGE art, in its many forms, to be a part of this process.

We always get the question: "So, what exactly is ARTS INTEGRATION?" It's much more than just doing fun little arts-and-crafts in school. It's actually exploring the core subjects through the lens of the arts.🔎📖
Example: MATH📕--the concept of fractions or patterns taught through music theory🎶
ENGLISH/LA📗--grammar through script -reading / -acting / -writing🎭
SCIENCE📘--how sound waves work 👂; how light creates color 🌈

--all in a way that kids ages 6-11 would enjoy and be involved.🥳

Fair WARNING: Vulnerable Mom Post -
I sometimes really dread the time when my kids come home after school because, after 6-7 hours of grueling worksheets and busywork, they've got another 1-2 hours of homework I have to push them through. In fact, my kids inform that even in times that they were waiting for other class mates to finish their work, they have not been allowed to start in on their homework, because, their teacher says, "That's what it is: HOMEwork."

You know what I really want? I want my kids to be able to come home and we can just play and get dinner ready in a peaceful environment. At our house, we love our trampoline and board games, and I love it when I don't have crying, complaining kids at the table still moaning on and on about homework while I try to cook dinner. Unfortunately, we don't have time on weekdays for any of our favorite things due to the "HOMEwork."

What if we could master the skills and concepts at their natural pace in a fun, interactive or artistic way in school and then come home without extra work to do? I can dream, can't I?

Our kids were in 3 different schools from each other this year 🙄…not because of their grade levels, but because we wanted something different for each of them. It was our attempt to individualize their education only to find out that individualization is almost impossible with our current education system and especially in the over-populated schools of our city 😬. Photo #1 has been our daily after-school regular—5 days a week, often up to 2 hours a day for my 4th grader! 😕*banging head against wall*

Let’s 👏🏻 fix 👏🏻this 👏🏻!
