UF/IFAS Peanut Field Day (Marianna) – August 13 - The North Florida Research and Education Center in Marianna will host the annual UF Peanut Field Day. This half-day educational program focuses exclusively on peanut production, with topics including insect, disease, and w**d control, variety performance, pesticide safety, and updates on the deer damage and deterrents work being performed by UF/IFAS. Florida and Georgia pesticide CEUs have been requested, as well as certified crop advisor CEUs. We anticipate approval for 1 Core and 2 category CEUs for Florida applicators.

UF/IFAS Row Crop Field Day (Quincy) – July 30 - Join us at the UF/IFAS North Florida Research and Education Center, in Quincy, Florida for the annual Row Crop Field Day. This half-day educational program focuses on corn and cotton related research updates pertaining to insect, w**d, disease, nematode and fertility management in both crops, as well as variety performance. Florida and Georgia pesticide CEUs have been requested for the program, as well as certified crop advisor CEUs. The program is anticipated to be approved for 1 Core and 2 category CEUs for Florida applicators. Preregistration is required.

Pesticide CEU Class 6/11/26 - UF/IFAS Extension Washington County will host Managing Unwanted Plants in Rights of Way and Aquatic Sites. The class has been approved for a total of 4 FL Pesticide Applicator CEUs. The CEUs may be used for license renewal in any of the following categories: Right-of-Way Pest Control, Aquatic Pest Control, Private Applicator Agriculture, Agricultural Row Crop Pest Control, Natural Areas W**d Management, and Ornamental and Turf Pest Control. The class is open to all, but the agenda is tailored for licensed pesticide applicators seeking CEUs for license renewal.

Agenda Announced! – Apply Now for the 2026 Florida Cattle Producer Educational Tour to Amarillo, Texas! We will be traveling to the Texas Panhandle to visit multiple feedlots and hear from buyers of Florida cattle. The focus of the trip is to build relationships and learn more about the role of intentional management at the cow-calf level in Florida. The goal is to take what we learn and apply it to benefit the overall success of the Florida cattle industry. More information about the trip can be found in this article. The application deadline is July 3rd.

Cotton Market Insights: Cotton Issues and Perspective - there are now multiple industry and government efforts underway aimed to improve the economics of the U.S. cotton industry. The Great American Cotton Plan—a series of initiatives to help support the cotton producer, improve the demand for cotton, revitalize the US textile industry, and improve US trade. U.S. mill use (US grown cotton in US mills) has essentially disappeared since the 1990’s. The plan proposes support and partnership for the National Cotton Council’s “Plant Not Plastics” initiative.

Florida Cattle Market Update: More Cattle on Feed in April according to the May Cattle on Feed Report. The report included total cattle on feed numbers, placements, marketings, and more for April. The total number of cattle on feed as of May 1 was 1.8% increase from last year and the first increase seen in 18 months. Placements were 5.5% higher, with marketings being down 10%. These numbers were all within pre-report estimates, but still beg the question, how could there be more cattle on feed when supplies are tightening?

UF/IFAS names Barry Tillman Interim Center director of North Florida Research and Education Center - effective July 31, 2026. Tillman will lead research, extension and teaching programs across NFREC’s campuses in Quincy, Marianna and Live Oak. He will succeed Dean Pringle, who recently was appointed chair of the UF/IFAS Department of Animal Sciences. Tillman’s leadership will help advance ongoing research, strengthen community engagement and position NFREC to respond to emerging challenges facing agriculture and rural economies in North Florida. https://buff.ly/9Yal43L

May 2026 Weather Summary & Summer Climate Outlook - May 2026 was one of the wettest on record. The average from all 8 Panhandle FAWN stations in May was 12.6”, which was 8.8″ above normal. The average from all 8 stations since January was 20.6″, now just -1.5″ below normal. There was a major rebound in soil moisture in May. The higher rainfall totals also provided significant drought relief. The CPC is expecting normal temperatures, but higher than normal rainfall in June. 96% chance of El Niño this winter, and a 37% chance it will be strong.
