This is not your average geometry lesson. Our upper elementary students are creating a geometry notebook that they will likely keep with them as they grow into adults.

The study of geometry does not have to be dry and boring. Instead, in the Montessori classroom, geometry is given to the students as a series of impressions through physical materials.

This might look like a cute snack set up, but it is much more than that. Notice the clear message on how many of each item each person can take... the plates for students to access, a utensil in each serving container. Children are developing independence by serving themselves. They are practicing waiting for another student to finish their snack so that they can have a spot on the snack table. They are figuring how to how get from "I would like a snack" to picking up a plate, dishing out the items they desire to eat, not exceeding the quantity established, and then sitting at the table, finishing a snack, and returning the dish to the wash bin. Those are a lot of steps, so while it looks like snack, there is so much more going on!
