This is ground breaking research from Nadine Gaab at Harvard University. There is NO REASON why students must “wait to fail” to receive help for reading.

New findings underscore the need for interventions before children start school, said Harvard researchers.

Today I’m thinking about the kids for whom summer break isn’t really a break at all.

The ones who don’t get to go on vacation, or sleep in late on lazy mornings in a cozy bed, or get an ice cream cone from the local shop.

Today I’m thinking about the kids for whom summer means a couple months of—

Growling, hungry tummies
Fending for themselves
An unsettled home environment
No routine or consistency
Counting down the minutes until they get to return to school—their safe space.

Because the reality is that school breaks aren’t all sunshine and rainbows for so many of our communities’ kids.

To them, school is the place they feel loved (even when they don’t show it), and teachers are their safe people (even when they’d never admit it).

Today I’m thinking of these kiddos and sending them so much extra love, even as my heart breaks for them. May they find the strength and guidance to break generational curses, overcome traumas, discover their potential, and be all they are meant to be—because at the root of it all, they are truly some of the bravest, most incredible humans this world has ever known.
