Hello Everyone
It's been a little while since my last post and that is because my posts seemed to be generated by challenges, I had encountered out in the world that I felt the need to address.
I am happy to say that my path has been undaunted lately and that is an achievement that all of you can also obtain if you are headed in a specific direction instead of sauntering through life. When you saunter, while it is necessary at times to find your inner peace and some resolve and even do some forgiveness work, if it is done too often you may become complacent to accept life coming at you instead of taking the rudder of your life and making a decision on what you want it to become in a year, three years, or even ten years.
I have been doing a few professional talks on rising above an Autism diagnosis, which many may question or even argue about my "being cured" of Autism. While it may be rather confusing to many who do not see my world from the inside out, you might believe that perhaps I was never Autistic in the first place. I carry myself with such confidence and pose now that you might wonder if I have ever gone through burnout or had a meltdown. I can assure you that both are in my records. After all, I did get fired from that classroom as I was in a tailspin trying to manage a class of 1st graders who did not yet understand the school's social structure.
No, I did NOT hit that child that the school claims I did. That little boy just wanted any attention from his mother he could get.
However, I didn't show up as the teacher I wanted to be either. I was stressed by children who did not understand how to behave.
As far as burnout, I am going through one right now at my job, not because it is bad and I don't like it anymore, because I actually love it.
What part do I not enjoy? Standing on a cement floor for four hours straight can be a lot for an older Aspie woman (versus the average age of a Barista at 24). I have been enduring a necessary fan that blows air and tests my tolerance for excessive sounds and sensitivities. You don't see how it bothers me as I do not make an issue of it or get mad. I use breathing techniques to conquer the sounds that are aggravating to me. I must admit that when a car drives up the street with a very noisy engine or there is a car in my drive-through window with heavy base music it takes twice as much energy to diffuse the intolerance. This is much like seeing your gas gauge drop quite a bit when you step on the gas and accelerate quickly. My energy depletes faster in these situations.
One final issue that is invisible to the onlooker, but very evident with people who try to have a conversation with me is the audio processing challenges. I have had to work with all my life. It looks like I am deaf, when in actuality, I am hearing every single sound and whatever is loudest wins. This can be difficult in any work environment where communication is a requirement. I need to hear ONLY the sounds that allow me to be successful.
Then one more challenge I face that you might not recognize is when someone is smoking in their car while at my window, particularly ma*****na.
The second challenge I face is lighting and that will not go away unless police, emergency, and especially construction lights stop while I am driving. I find that the lighting issue will keep me on the Spectrum for the rest of my life. I know that a lot of you will say that the lighting annoys you too. Do you face high anxiety when it occurs?
I try my best to rise above the challenges that you may believe are commonplace with Autism, but that does not mean that I am cured, only that I have increased my tolerance and found alternative ways to control my sensitivities for a short time.
I do have texture issues with food and clothing too, but it would be foolish for me to force myself to wear or eat things that do not suit me for I know my limitations.
If you find that you would like to minimize the effects of Autism on your body and want to find the calm resolve in you. I can help you find that inner calmness to progress through your day.
