Thank you Stock Horse of Texas for hosting a Short-sleeve event with morning classes! We did some cutting, reining, boxing, pleasure and trail. We had some highs and lows but came away with a better understanding of how to show our horses in complicated situations with multiple variables!

Horses ultimately decide what they want to do.. they decide to let us catch them, they decide to behave, and they decide to go into that small, scary box with wheels. It’s up to us to guide their decisions by making the wrong choice “difficult” and the right choice ”easy”

Donkeys are part of the horse family, with noticeable differences such as longer ears, a smaller/shorter size, and a vocal “bray” heard for miles.. also, donkeys tend to hold onto their heavy winter fur longer into the warmer months compared to horses. Here are some shots of our donkey with a full coat in May, and finally slick in mid July!

We had to blaze a trail today.. all the spring rain brought lots of summer w**d growth! Horses did great! We always enjoy our time out of the arena, away from drills and patterns, letting our equine minds relax!

Lots happening at the ranch today.. some obedience work in the arena with side passing, backing L‘s and lead departures, and then some reschooling in the round pen after a “vacation”!

We changed hats on Wednesday night for the annual Marble Falls Youth Rodeo! 32 kids rode their hearts out, vying for the treasured buckle awards on a hot July evening! Thank you to all of the event sponsors and volunteers as well as the MFRA board members, who set patterns, adjusted poles and drove the tractor.. even the jackpot mystery event at the end of the night boasted 16 teams. See y’all next year!

We’re getting ready for the next Ranch Horse competition in three weeks, which includes cow work.. practicing stops and turns with the flag-cow helps sharpen both horse and rider!

Congratulations to the 2026 MFRA Rodeo Queen and Princess who were crowned last Friday night at the rodeo! Thank you to Penny Reeves who judged the 8 contestants on their riding skills, their application, and their interview presentation! It was a tight race as some of the girls were 1/2 points apart! What a great opportunity to learn and practice their writing and verbal skills for future use in college applications, scholarship applications, and job interviews! Thank you Ben Shields and KBEY for letting the girls do a radio spot! Thank you MFRA for asking the Queen and RunnerUp to carry the flags during Saturday nights opening ceremonies! Thank you to our Queen sponsors of awards and scholarships: Welch Industries LLC, MFRA, and Haydon Horsemanship!
