It's one of aviation's biggest milestones, and Beau has joined a tradition that generations of pilots have experienced before him.

Why do pilots cut off a shirt tail after a first solo?
It looks a little strange... until you know the story.

Back when airplanes had two seats and no headsets, instructors would sit behind student pilots and gently tug on the back of their shirt to get their attention or help guide them during training.

On a student's first solo flight, the instructor isn't there anymore. The student has proven they can safely fly the airplane on their own.

So, as a fun aviation tradition, the instructor cuts off the student's shirt tail to symbolize that they no longer need that gentle "tug" from the instructor.

It's a tradition that has been passed down through generations of pilots—and it's still one of our favorite moments to celebrate.

Every student pilot has a story. Some journeys just require a little more determination. When Kyle came to us with dreams of a career in aviation but with a physical obstacle, we said that we were on-board for the challenge!

Kyle is an amputee who has faced challenges that many people will never fully understand. Yet through hard work, perseverance, and an unwavering commitment to his dream, he continues to move closer to becoming a pilot.

At Florida Keys Flight Academy, we believe aviation should be accessible to anyone willing to put in the work. Every student learns differently, every journey is unique, and every success is worth celebrating.

Kyle's story isn't about obstacles. It's about resilience.

It's about refusing to let circumstances define what is possible.
