Capt. Malcolm is navigating more challenging conditions at the Vandenberg today. The seas are rough with 4-5 foot waves, and visibility is reduced to about 20 feet due to the conditions. The wind is blowing from the south at 13 knots, with gusts up to 20 knots, and there's a moderate current. Despite these factors, the water temperature remains a comfortable 85°F.

The second annual Combatant Diver Challenge is currently taking place in Key West from June 10-12, 2024, hosted at the Special Forces Underwater Operations School on Fleming Key, NAS Key West. This event features elite divers from various special operations units, including Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Air Force Pararescuemen, and Marine Raiders, competing in a series of rigorous tests designed to assess their physical fitness, mental toughness, and advanced combat diving skills.

Capt. Hook's is teamed up with NAUI to support the event! Yesterday, we donated our boats to take the media and Gold Star families out to watch part of the competition, up close. We also had another boat that took civilians (locals) and military families out to watch this unique competition. Today, we are part of the navigation course at Mole Pier. We also will be up close at the swim contest at Patio Beach as a part of this effort.

The USNS General Hoyt S Vandenberg was sunk on May 27, 2009, off the coast of Key West, Florida, to create an artificial reef and attract divers from around the world. At Capt. Hook's, we had the opportunity to dive this wonderful wreck for our Vandiversary Celebration of 15 years since the sinking of this ship.

As you take a peek at the celebration dive, take a look at the growth that has developed in just 15 years. It not only has become the underwater spectacle, as was anticipated for advanced divers worldwide, but it has also enhanced the community in which it resides both for the City Of Key West financially, and as an artificial reef for both local and pelagic marine species that make their way to the wreck.
