Principal Mike Zitzer is the first to admit: the Middle School entry hallway needed some sprucing-up.

"Some even called it unbecoming," said Mr. Zitzer. "You kind of felt like you were just dropped into a random hallway rather than walking into the entrance of one of the premier middle schools in the area."

So he did something about it. Mr. Zitzer created two dozen metal prints depicting students experiencing metaphor work (School As Expedition) and placed them on both sides of the entryway. When you get a chance, drop by and take a look at this stunning display!

Once more, our good friends at Health Care Family Credit Union stepped up to collect classroom supplies for the big MRH Back to School Fair, taking place this Saturday, August 22, at MRH High School. HCFCU solicited and then matched donations by credit union members. Get 'em while supplies last!
Stop by the fair from 4 pm-6 pm and enjoy food, fun and freebies. Starting at 5 pm, each student attendee plus one adult may enjoy the Maplewood Family Aquatic Center.

BONUS: The Maplewood Family Aquatic Center invites each student plus one adult to enjoy the pool (free) from 5 pm-8 pm!

Jekyll Island Expedition update from Principal Mike Zitzer:

"This year we decided to leave a little earlier in hopes of making great time and arriving at Georgia 4-H at Camp Jekyll with enough time for students to settle in before lunch and our afternoon sessions. Thanks to all of you for getting students to Launch on time and helping us start the week smoothly. Launch ran incredibly well, we left right on schedule, and made it to Camp Jekyll shortly after 10:00 am. Honestly, this may have been the smoothest arrival we’ve ever had.

Even after a 16+ hour bus ride, students hit the ground running on Monday. We spent the afternoon getting acquainted with campus, beginning our first sessions, and almost every student was able to make it to the beach. It was more of a “dip our toe in” kind of day, but on Tuesday, students will jump fully into a full day of learning and field experiences.

One of my favorite parts of the day was hearing and seeing students engage with the content as scientists, conservationists, and ecologists. You can already see how two years of expeditions at MRH have prepared them to ask questions, make observations, and fully participate in experiences like this. Students weren’t just going through the motions. They were genuinely engaged.

You could also feel the excitement building as we got closer to the island. Students were obviously ready to get off the bus, but more importantly, they were excited for everything this week represents. When we collected devices, a few students told others, “They just don’t understand how great it is to have a phone-free week.” They remembered the friendships, memories, and experiences they had during Touch of Nature last year and recognized that being present is part of what makes weeks like this meaningful.

I don’t know that I could ask for a better mindset heading into the week. I look forward to sharing updates and photos with you each evening so you can experience a little bit of the week alongside us."

These are the smiling faces who greeted the 8th graders on expedition at Jekyll Island, Georgia, this morning. MRH Operations Director Dr. Mike Dittrich (former middle school principal) and teacher Nicole Kinkelaar are masters of logistics. You have to be, if you're going to coordinate activities for 108 middle school students for a full week!

If you were out and about in Maplewood this morning, chances are you witnessed MRH Middle School students at any of nine locations for Analog Day of Service, a low-tech activity where the students carried out service projects rather than use tech devices of any kind. Students cleaned up parks, stocked free neighborhood pantries, sowed the summer planters distributed around Maplewood, read books to preschoolers, took care of our bees, planted native plants on campus, and more.
