Julia, an 11 year old student, recently used charcoal pencil for the first time. Her careful observation of this still life is apparent in the reflective qualities of the brass candlestick and the wax drip on the side of the candle.

Currently, I take some of my students to draw from statues at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It’s a great way to study the figure and add to their portfolios.

Claire is a 10th grade student learning shading techniques, contour drawing, and textures using various types of drawing pencils. The elements and principles of art help build an
