Happy 178th birthday to Frank Duveneck (October 9, 1848 – 1919).

John Singer Sargent called him “the greatest talent of the brush of this generation,” and the paintings back that up.

Born in Covington, Kentucky, Duveneck trained at the Royal Academy in Munich. There he developed a dark, fast, alla prima style: loaded brushstrokes, dramatic light, and portraits that feel alive. Works like Whistling Boy and The Turkish Page shocked American audiences in the 1870s and changed what American painting could look like.

He was also a great teacher. His students in Munich, Florence, and Venice became known as the “Duveneck Boys,” and the group included John Twachtman and Joseph DeCamp. He later came home to teach at the Art Academy of Cincinnati for decades, shaping generations of American artists.

Empathy is hard to teach, yet it's one of the most powerful tools for capturing the figure.

Getting to spend even an hour with Victor Wang as he demonstrated his charcoal portrait process was something special. Watching him work, you learn as much from his patience and judgment as from his technique. For my young student, meeting a master in person was a moment of real encouragement. It's one thing to admire great work and another to see that it's made by a person, one deliberate mark at a time. Thank you, Victor, for your generosity.
