Found: a 1938 painted glass panel copying Frans Hals's Claes Duyst van Voorhout. Turns out 1938 was peak "Hals mania" in America, with major exhibitions and a landmark catalogue putting this exact painting in the spotlight. Someone in 1938 loved this portrait enough to put it on glass.

This weekend's teen workshop tackled two of the toughest subjects in drawing: hands and feet. Every student in the room was a returning one, and the talent on display was real.

There are a million ways to build up a drawing. I tend to veer here and there based on my expectations for the drawing. Here are a few shots of a recent drawing progression. Graphite and charcoal on newsprint. I started off very sketchy, trying to capture a quick likeness, then used a graphite stick to fill in some values and get some edge work down. Then I pounced in some charcoal powder to give it a good "dusting", and erased around the silhouette to clean it up a bit. Next, I more gently erased out small areas and brought in more fine graphite tools to capture detail.

I may spend another few hours on it before I get bored. I'll capture more in-progress photos of it if you're interested.

We've got a teen workshop this Saturday that has become my pride and joy to teach. Portrait Drawing. With just a few spots left, your teen will walk away with a stronger understanding of how to successfully draw the facial features, and a few drawings to take home.

And the following week, they can learn how to draw those most challenging body parts - hands and feet.
