What if you gave yourself two hours to make something without worrying about getting it “right”?

On Thursday, October 15, we’re bringing Layered Landscapes to Creative In Common - CINC in South Orange.

This mixed media collage experience is designed for adults who want time to experiment with color, texture and composition in a relaxed environment.

You’ll work with painted papers, collage materials and acrylic paint while building your own landscape-inspired artwork one layer at a time.

You do not need previous collage or art experience.

You’ll receive guidance throughout the process while still having plenty of room to make your own creative decisions.

You don’t have to consider yourself an artist to enjoy making art.

Sometimes all you need is a little time, a few materials and the freedom to experiment.

On Thursday, October 15, Express Yourself Studios will be at Creative In Common - CINC for Layered Landscapes, a welcoming mixed-media workshop focused on color, texture, layering and creative exploration.

You’ll have the opportunity to slow down, try new materials and create a piece one layer at a time. There is no pressure to make a perfect landscape and no single right way to participate.

No prior art experience is required.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, and if you haven’t visited your local library lately, you may be surprised by how much is happening there.

Libraries have been an important part of Express Yourself Studios’ community programming for many years.

We’ve brought pottery, painting, mixed-media collage, and other creative experiences to libraries throughout New Jersey for children, teens, adults, families, and older adults.

What I’ve always appreciated about library programming is that it makes trying something new accessible right in the community.

And we have several more library programs ahead this fall, including workshops with Jersey City Public Library, Piscataway Public Library, Linden Public Library, Union Public Library, and Belleville Public Library.

So this month, we’re recognizing the librarians and library teams who continue creating opportunities for people to learn, make, connect, and participate.

If your library card hasn’t gotten much use lately, September is a good month to change that.

After more than 16 years of use at Express Yourself Studios, I’m ready to find a new home for some of our longtime studio furniture.

I have 9 IKEA JOKKMOKK tables and 36 chairs available. They are definitely well loved and not new, but they’re sturdy and have plenty of life left. With some sanding, paint, stain, or a little creative attention, they could make a great setup for:

A new or growing art studio
An artist setting up a home studio or creative workspace
A children’s playroom or craft room
A homeschool or learning space
An after-school program, community organization, or nonprofit
A workshop, classroom, or makerspace

Ideally, I’d love to sell everything together as a lot, especially for someone who needs to furnish a larger creative or educational space. I’m also open to discussing individual table-and-chair sets.

I’d really like to have these moved on to their next home by the end of the year, so please feel free to share this with anyone you think might be able to put them to good use.

In Layered Landscapes, we’ll start with simple materials and build a composition using painted papers, acrylic paint, texture, shape, color, and layering.

You don’t need to arrive with a finished idea. We’ll take it step by step, experimenting with materials and making creative decisions as your piece develops.

Everyone will create a large original mixed-media landscape, with guidance throughout the process. No two finished artworks will be alike.

A creative business rarely looks exactly the same 17 years later.

Express Yourself Studios was founded in 2008, and for more than 16 years we welcomed people into our brick-and-mortar studio.

In March 2025, that chapter closed.

The business didn’t.

We transitioned to a fully mobile and off-site model, bringing professionally facilitated creative experiences directly to corporations, libraries, schools, senior communities, healthcare organizations, nonprofits, and community partners.

That transition reminded us of something important:

Express Yourself Studios was never just about a building.

It was about the experience.

The teaching.

The relationships.

And creating environments where people of different ages and experience levels feel comfortable making something.

National Black Business Month gives us an opportunity to reflect not only on longevity, but on adaptability.

Seventeen years later, we’re continuing to evolve and continuing to bring creativity directly into the communities and organizations we serve.

A summer morning, clay, botanical textures, and something handmade to take home.

On Thursday, August 20, Express Yourself Studios will be at South Street Gardens in Morristown for Clay & Succulents.

Participants will learn simple hand-building techniques to create a clay planter, experiment with botanical impressions and texture, and finish the experience with a live succulent to take home as part of their finished piece.

No pottery experience is needed, and all materials are included.

For more than 17 years, Express Yourself Studios has partnered with libraries, schools, senior communities, nonprofits, businesses, and organizations throughout New Jersey to make creativity more accessible.

As a Black-owned business founded by artist and teaching artist Simone Anthony-Brown, we've learned that art has the power to bring people together, build confidence, and create lasting connections.

Every workshop starts with the same materials, but they never end the same way.

Watching people take an idea and make it their own is one of the most rewarding parts of a workshop.

Whether we're working with clay, paint, collage, or mixed media, each class becomes a collection of completely different creative voices.
