Aikido works for people of all shapes, sizes, abilities and ages. Masa Gatsu A Gatsu, true victory is self victory says one must control oneself before attempting to harmonize and control others. Without good balance and control of oneself, one can neither avoid an attack nor apply an effective technique on others. It is through self-control that one learns a harmonious way of life.

Throwback Thursday.
Hard to believe how much change happens in seemingly short time. This video is 8 years old. Some of us still had hair in the video. The “class leader” is now a pr***en. Senseis Richard and Earl (who are no longer with us) are looking on and smiling in the lobby. And the dojo has since received a full makeover.
While a lot has changed the important things have not. The community of love peace and collaboration AIMA has developed over the past 40 years is still here. The friends and family that have come and gone still leave a lasting impression. We continue to move forward teaching aikido and the art of peace to any and all that are interested in a joyful, accepting and collaborative environment.
Come see what we are about. Or for those who have been with us in the past, stop in and say hi.

Nonviolence is an intention. When we see things as partners rather than opposite it changes our dynamic. We are not at odds, rather we are completing the totality of understanding. Working together rather than fighting. Providing different perspectives to grow a deeper understand the truth from all points of view. If we know something is a partner to what we see as its opposite we can let them both go and find the non resistant beauty of understanding.

This post is overdue, but I could not find the right words to do Sensei Earl justice.
Last month Sensei Earl Rogers passed away at the age of 87. He was well established in the St Louis martial arts community having taught so many in several arts. He has been a member and senior instructor at AIMA for many years. He will be missed but the lessons learned from him will continue to be taught and shared.
There is so much more that can be said about such an amazing man but I will keep it simple here. Feel free to share your stories and memories. .earl

Aiki Taiso are the movements basic to aikido technique that are practiced at the beginning of each class.
Kobayashi sensei made. Clear that they are more than just warm up exercises done with stretching. They are based in the principal of Go Go No Shugyo - Awareness After Training. The purpose of the Aiki Taiso is to “know yourself” so you can take better care of yourself. Being aware during the movements of any tension or pain in your body and wha you need to do to relax them. If you are not paying attention to yourself during Aiki Taiso how will you develop a habit of learning from your Aikido. And not just learning for yourself but training your understanding so that you can help others.
As you do each movement seek to comprehend the basic movement and the direction of Ki flow. Be aware of your center. Keep weight underside. Keep relaxed, move your body in unison and let your Ki flow extending it forward.
Remember all of the arts of aikido are built upon the Aiki Taiso. .
