Possible Mountain Lion Sighting Reported in Mapleton

CASS COUNTY, N.D. (July 30th, 2026) – Around 8:30 a.m. this morning, the Cass County Sheriff's Office was notified that a citizen in Mapleton reported seeing what they believed to be a mountain lion near Annie's Lane, walking behind residential homes.

At this time, the reported sighting has not been confirmed by the Sheriff's Office. However, out of an abundance of caution and in the interest of public safety, we want to make residents aware of the report.

Residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, especially during the summer months, when children spend more time outdoors. Parents are encouraged to discuss with their children the importance of staying away from any large wild animal they may encounter and immediately notifying a trusted adult if they observe what they believe to be a mountain lion.

If you observe a mountain lion, do not approach it. Instead, maintain a safe distance and call 911 immediately.

The North Dakota Game and Fish Department advised that, without physical evidence, it is difficult to confirm or rule out a reported mountain lion sighting. They also noted that while sightings are uncommon, mountain lions can occasionally be seen anywhere in the state.

The Sheriff's Office is working closely with the North Dakota Game and Fish Department to monitor the situation and ensure an appropriate response is taken to protect our community's safety.

Dear Mapleton Community,

Both the Central Cass and Mapleton School Boards have decided to move forward with the reorganization process. An internal team will be formed to outline the state-specific requirements for the action plan, which will be presented later this fall. We will focus on areas such as Governance, Board Representation, Staffing, Programming, Tax Implications, and Finance. The merger of the two districts is being considered for its potential to offer greater efficiencies and overall advantages for taxpayers. While we will work diligently to present the details of our collaboration, the final decision will rest with the voters of each District to approve the Reorganization. (Please refer to the attached timeline.)

The discussion about joining forces has been ongoing for over 40 years, and we believe now is the time to make a definitive decision as we actively plan for the future.
