We are so incredibly grateful to have the amazing Suzy Benson provide us with DEIB training this year for ALL of our staff!

Suzy is an incredible speaker, facilitator, and experienced leadership coach. She leads groups in Africa & started the African Promise foundation - which is how Cindy met her ☺️

To have her travel all the way from Seattle to Springfield to provide our staff the best possible DEIB was something we will never forget and will always be grateful for. Her message resonated with how we support our clients, hire and support our team, how we live our lives in our community, and how we can cultivate the most positive work environment we possibly can by being inclusive and diverse.

Suzy’s message reminds us of how we need to check ourselves, and accept ourselves! It was such a privilege to have her here! We are very lucky to have special speakers like her making a positive difference in the world 🌎

For those who are interested I did a Podcast with Character Strong. It's a short 15 minute listen and talks about shame, vulnerability, and empathy when talking about race. My experience is that NO ONE wants to believe they are racist, or heaven forbid be accused of being racist. When this happens our first emotion is often SHAME and when shame shows up defensiveness is usually our first go to. Shame can quickly shut us down and we are less likely to take risks such as talking about race. The golden ticket out is empathy. Empathy for ourselves when we make mistakes AND empathy for BIPOC who tell us their lived experiences. If someone tells you that you stepped on their toe and it hurts, believe them. If you are the one that stepped on the toe, be kind to yourself. Most of us are trying hard to learn and do better!

Hold people accountable for racism

Last week I delivered a training that included thinking of examples of Systemic Racism. I did some research and came up with this list. Can you think of any other examples?
• Housing (gentrification)
• Distribution of wealth
• Education
• Employment
• Red lining
• Criminal justice, health care,
• Having to provide your own car for a driving test, but needing a license to buy a car
• College entrance exams,
• Stop and Frisk policing strategies
• The unconscious bias in officers leads them to racially profile
• Loss of right to vote for felons
• Schools not allowing corn-rows or dreadlocks,
• Professional dress standards (black women are often encouraged to make their hair look more white and straight)
• BMI standards used to determine health and cost of life insurance. The body type used for the basis is white and male
• Leaders in power
• ‘Proper’ English. Anglo-Saxon English is considered the standard for school, testing, etc. Black children who speak AAE/Black English and don’t code switch well in early education are often labeled as having lower intelligence
• 3 strikes you’re out,
• Unequal sentences for crack cocaine/cocaine
