IEP or 504 Meeting - What can you expect and how can you prepare for it? I had no clue what to expect at our first 504 meeting, so I have put together a few suggestion to help you be prepared. Biggest tip - 👉Be sure to have your partner, grandparent, or trusted friend attend the meeting with you! This person can take notes or be a great source for helping your recall what was discussed. There are many reading programs to pick from so which one should you select? In these slides I discuss the 6 elements of structured literacy that a good reading program should contain. Structured reading programs will contain explict lesson instruction for teachers and the materials will be systematically laid out. Students move to the next skill only after they have master the previous one. Concepts build upon one another helping students understand the 'why' of our language. :)

Here is a quick read on how one's spelling ability impacts reading and writing.
Spelling should always be taught with explicit and direct instruction. To enhance the student learning consider including: Morphology, History of English, and Word Origin.

After reading this article share any 'aha' moment(s) you had about the impact spelling has on reading and writing. 🙌

Without that direct and explicit spelling instruction, many children will struggle to spell (and write) even if their reading is at or above grade level.

Dyslexia - Now What🤷🏻‍♀️…?
When my son was diagnosed with dyslexia, I didn’t know what to do. The reading assistance program at his school was not helping him and I felt lost. Parents often ask me, “what are signs that my child may have dyslexia?”
Listed are a few possible signs but there many other symptoms and factors to take into consideration before determining your child is dyslexic. Consider consulting with your child’s teachers, finding out if others in the family are dyslexic, talking with your family physician or having your child evaluated by a neuropsychologist. The sooner you can get and accurate evaluation, the sooner you can help your child reach their fullest potential!🤩
