Talia Blake was a participant in Aspire Greater Cleveland’s most recent Microsoft Office certification class. Talia experienced barriers to reentering the workforce after leaving it to care for young children. She found that she was able to get low-paying, low-quality jobs, but knew there was something better out there for her if she could just find the right opportunity. Aspire’s Microsoft certification class provided office skills training and a paid work experience opportunity, which for Talia, led to a job offer with a local social service agency. Talia said that the most valuable part of the program was meeting people who could connect her with the opportunities she knew existed but was unable to access. She also received interview and resume help that gave her confidence. Talia is certain that the future holds even better opportunities because of her experience in the program.

Aspire’s next cohort of Microsoft Office begins on August 1st at the Cleveland Public Library’s Lorain Branch, 8216 Lorain Ave, Cleveland, OH 44102. The class will be held on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays from 10:00 AM-12:30 PM. Registration sessions will be held on July 18, 20, 25, & 27 from 10:00 AM-12:30 PM. We're thrilled to partner with Beachwood Schools to offer free English as a Second Language (ESOL) and Citizenship Classes for adults at the Beachwood Board of Education on Fairmount Boulevard.

“These programs are booming and we have wait lists at various sites,” said Aspire Greater Cleveland AES - ESL Specialist Jonathan Khadige (pictured). “We want people to know these classes are being offered and we will admit more people as space becomes available.”

Venus Jones (pictured left) is one of fifteen adult learners who completed our Microsoft Office training course in December. The learners spent 17 weeks learning skills to obtain certification and five weeks engaging in work experience with local employers.

"The instruction was valuable, the teacher was very patient and the internship gave me a good understanding of what an office job might be like," said Venus.

Our Microsoft Office training program is a collaborative project between Cuyahoga County Public Library, Cleveland Public Library, Euclid Public Library, OhioMeansJobs Cleveland - Cuyahoga County, Cuyahoga County Division of Children and Family Services and Deaconess Foundation.

In October, eight Aspire Greater Cleveland staff members attended the Ohio Association for Adult and Continuing Education Conference in Columbus. Five of them gave presentations at the conference. This is Brandy. She became an Aspire Greater Cleveland student in February 2022. Her goal is to get her GED so that she can prove to herself and her children that she can do it. She is a mother of six children, and two of them are junior and seniors in high school. Considering that they will be graduating high school soon, she wants to practice what she has preached to her children over the years, "Education is important."

"I want to show my children that you can achieve your goals no matter the circumstances and it's never too late to get back on track."

Brandy is committed to her goal of getting her GED. She attends class regularly, completes every assignment and is a lively participant during each class session. She is very upbeat and kind. After she receives her GED, she wants to attend Tri-C to learn a trade and to be a better example for her children.
