The Medical Assisting program, called Medical Assisting Technologies, is an 840 clock hour program. In this course, students are trained and prepare for three certifications. These certifications are STNA (State Tested Nurse Aid), Registered Medical Assistant (RMA), and Registered Phlebotomy Technician (RPT). During the course students are taught and practice the skills needed to be an STNA, Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist. Skills and concepts taught include vital signs, appling/assisting with wound dressings, catheter care, medication dosage calculations, introductory medical terminology, introductory anatomy & physiology, use of medical forms, HIPAA, use of electronic medical/health records, patient transfers, infection control, patient assessment, assisting with medical specialties and much more. After successful completion of classroom and lab instruction, students complete a clinical externship at various local healthcare facilities. For STNA, the students complete 2 days of externship at a local long term care facility. For Medical Assisting, the students complete 64 hours of administrative and clinical job externship at local medical offices. With Phlebotomy, the students complete 80 hours (2 weeks) of externship at local healthcare facilities. Job opportunities for a Medial Assistant include working in a physicians office, dental office (front desk), hospitals, extended care facilities (nursing homes), assisted living facilities, and other types of healthcare facilities such as walk in clinics, and Occupational/Physical Therapy clinics.
