September marks a season of new beginnings for our youth. It brings a new school year, new friends, new challenges, new scout camping trips — and most importantly, new opportunities and possibilities.

In Scouting, one of the greatest opportunities we offer is the realization that every young person has the power to make a difference in their world and in their community. Through youth leadership and teamwork, our Scouts push themselves to try new things, embark on new adventures, take responsibility for their choices, and contribute to their community through hard work. Along the way, friendships deepen, confidence grows, and every new challenge becomes a chance to discover what they are capable of.

We only need to look at what Mansfield Troop 17 accomplished last year to see what is possible. Our troop has once again been a force for good in our community — from parades honoring our veterans, to the Mansfield Great Duck Race, to outdoor conservation projects across town. And this year, Sriram, Ethan, Jarrod, and Mark earned the highest rank in Scouting, Eagle Scout, by leading meaningful service projects for local nonprofits right here in Mansfield.

A new school year brings change, and change can be difficult. The Scout Law offers guidance that can make the transition smoother, whether it’s a first year in a new school or a final year before moving on.

Helpful: Volunteer to assist others without expecting a reward.
Friendly: Be a friend to everyone, including those who are different.
Courteous: Be polite to everyone and use good manners.
Kind: Treat others as you want to be treated and protect living things.
Obedient: Follow the rules of family, school, and community.
Cheerful: Look for the bright side of life and lift others’ spirits.
Brave: Face difficult challenges with courage.

Edward Everett Hale once said:
“I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”

This is not just a quote — it is the essence of Scouting. As the scout slogan says, "Do a Good Turn Daily!" Every person, young or old, can offer friendship, lend a hand, or brighten someone’s day. And that small act can change someone’s world.

Scouts BSA Troop 17 Mansfield of the Narragansett Council is proud to announce that Sriram Marthineni has earned the rank of Eagle Scout on August 6th, 2026.

Sriram’s Eagle Scout Service Project cleared a 1-mile red and green trail on the Mansfield Natural Resources Trust of Mansfield Richard and Jane Sheehan Nature Preserve. (https://nrtma.org/trails/sheehan/) These new trails can be accessed from Hall St. and the Access Road to the Mansfield Animal shelter. In addition, under Sriram’s leadership, Leopold benches were built and installed on the Sheen property, Dot York, WWII Nature Trail and Taylor’s Hill.

Sriram has camped with the troop in all the New England states, New York and New Mexico. Sriram has proudly worn his Boy Scout uniform while traveling with Mansfield Troop 17 over 3,000 miles to Philmont Scout Ranch High Adventure base in New Mexico.

While at Philmont, Sriram served as Crew Leader, summitted the 9,003 ft Toot of Time and received the 50-Miler award which requires a trek of at least 50 consecutive miles over a minimum of five consecutive days, while fulfilling planning, conservation, and leadership requirements.

We congratulate Sriram on earning one of the most respected awards in our nation. His efforts to achieve the highest rank in the Scouting America Scouts BSA program have been amazing.

Our community has benefited greatly from Sriram’s efforts to earn the rank of Eagle Scout for which we are all extremely grateful.

Ethan Souza, a member of Mansfield BSA Troop 17, has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest advancement rank in Scouting America. Only a small percentage of Scouts ever reach this milestone.

For his Eagle Scout Service Project, Ethan led a team of volunteers to perform renovations to the Mansfield Historical Society Copeland House. The Copeland House is the headquarters of the Mansfield History Center. It is located at 53 Rumford Avenue. It is where most of the historical society collection can be found. They welcome visitors.

Congratulations Ethan to adding your name to the history books with earning the rank of Eagle Scout within the 103-year-old BSA Troop 17 of Mansfield, the oldest troop within the Narragansett Council Northeast District. Through your community service efforts and leadership, you have not only helped the Mansfield Historical Society, you have also made history with this achievement. Keep up the great work.

The Natural Resources Trust of Mansfield invites you to attend the dedication of the Richard and Jane Sheehan Nature Preserve.

Jane donated the 23-acre nature preserve to the NRT in 2023. Preserved in perpetuity for public, passive, recreational use.

Over the past year a trail system was established by Scouts BSA Troop 17 as part of Sriram Marthineni Eagle Service Project.

The dedication will be on June 27th at 11:00 AM. A nature walk will follow.

The entrance is on the road to the animal shelter at 175 Fruit Street.

On Memorial Day we honor those who served and gave everything. 10 Years ago, on another rainy Memorial Day Paul Monti of Raynham, MA visited Mansfield to allow residents to honor the memory of his son who died in service to us almost 20 years ago. While Paul Monti passed away in 2022 his family’s sacrifice and that of his son are not forgotten.

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, March 3, 1863, has awarded in the name of Congress the Medal of Honor to:

Staff Sergeant Jared C. Monti United States Army

For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty:

Staff Sergeant Jared C. Monti distinguished himself by acts of gallantry and intrepidity above and beyond the call of duty while serving as a team leader with Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3d Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3d Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, in connection with combat operations against an armed enemy in Nuristan Province, Afghanistan, on June 21, 2006.

While Staff Sergeant Monti was leading a mission aimed at gathering intelligence and directing fire against the enemy, his 16-man patrol was attacked by as many as 50 enemy fighters. On the verge of being overrun, Staff Sergeant Monti quickly directed his men to set up a defensive position behind a rock formation. He then called for indirect fire support, accurately targeting the rounds upon the enemy who had closed to within 50 meters of his position. While still directing fire, Staff Sergeant Monti personally engaged the enemy with his rifle and a gr***de, successfully disrupting an attempt to flank his patrol. Staff Sergeant Monti then realized that one of his Soldiers was lying wounded in the open ground between the advancing enemy and the patrol's position.

With complete disregard for his own safety, Staff Sergeant Monti twice attempted to move from behind the cover of the rocks into the face of relentless enemy fire to rescue his fallen comrade. Determined not to leave his Soldier, Staff Sergeant Monti made a third attempt to cross open terrain through intense enemy fire. On this final attempt, he was mortally wounded, sacrificing his own life in an effort to save his fellow Soldier.

Staff Sergeant Monti's selfless acts of heroism inspired his patrol to fight off the larger enemy force. Staff Sergeant Monti's immeasurable courage and uncommon valor are in keeping with the highest traditions of military service and reflect great credit upon himself, Headquarters and Headquarters Troop, 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 10th Mountain Division, and the United States Army.

Monti was born Sept. 20, 1975, in Abington, Massachusetts, to Paul and Janet Monti. He had a sister, Nicole, and a brother, Timothy. When the family moved to nearby Raynham, Monti began to develop a sense of adventure and a love of sports, of which he played several at Bridgewater-Raynham Regional High School,

We all know that Troop 17 (formerly, Troop 1) has been around continuously since 1923. That make out troop almost 103 years old. Maybe…

Check out this article from the Mansfield News, published on April 12, 1912 - exactly 114 years ago today. Is Troop 17, actually, older than we thought? It appears so. Note that many of the names in the article match the old photo of Troop 1. The Mansfield News are has articles of Troop 1 supporting the Memorial Day activities in 1912 and camping at Lake Greenwood (in West Mansfield) and the Norton reservoir at that time.

No matter the date we started, Troop 17 is proud to continually serve the youth of Mansfield to this day.

The Mansfield Council on Aging and Fire Department have partnered to coordinate with local Boy Scouts to help seniors and residents with disabilities who need assistance shoveling pathways at their homes.

Volunteers will not be available to begin until 5:00 pm tonight.

If you are a senior or have a disability and need help, contact the Council on Aging at 508 261 7368 or email [email protected] to be added to the list.

We cannot guarantee service or provide a specific timeline.

Volunteers will work through requests as quickly as possible and will do their best to reach everyone in need.

If you are able, clear a pathway from the street to the hydrant nearest your home and remove snow and ice within a three-foot perimeter so the firefighters can access it. Let's hope they're not needed, but if they are, every second counts!
You (or your neighbor) just might be glad you did.

The tree lot is open! The trees arrived this morning still covered in snow and the lot was stocked by the scouts.

The tree lot hours are Monday through Friday 4PM to 8PM and weekends 9AM to 8PM.

There is easy parking at 50 West St. Mansfield. For our older customers, this is the former site of the Mansfield Police Station, and for our even older customers this is the site of former Mansfield Town Hall.

We look forward to seeing on tree lot.
