Speaker Andrew Ramsammy said he has observed how misrepresentation of different communities can “distort reality, limit empathy and perpetuate stereotypes” throughout his career.

“Accurate representation goes beyond tokenism. It involves portraying communities in all their complexity, addressing both their challenges and triumphs, and breaking away from stereotypes,” he said.

With an educational background from Columbia’s graduate school of journalism, Ramsammy will be able to touch on how big media scales to smaller environments like Richland County.

We asked Andrew Ramsammy how he hopes to enrich our audience’s understanding of media bias and encourage diversity in local areas such as . Here's what he had to say:

"I hope to enrich the audience’s understanding of media bias by highlighting how deeply it can shape public opinion and limit access to truthful, nuanced stories, particularly in local communities like Richland County.

"By showcasing specific examples of how certain voices are marginalized or underrepresented in the media, I aim to demonstrate the real-world consequences of bias, including the reinforcement of stereotypes and the silencing of critical perspectives.

"To encourage diversity, I want to emphasize the power of local journalism and community-driven media to provide authentic narratives that reflect the realities of all residents.

"By supporting and promoting media platforms that prioritize inclusivity—whether through reporting, hiring practices, or community engagement—we can build a media landscape that is both representative and equitable. In Richland County and similar areas, this means encouraging local storytelling that amplifies diverse voices and fosters a greater connection between the media and the community it serves."
