In anticipation of classes starting tomorrow, we at North Hall Library would like to welcome students to the 2026 Fall Semester! Beginning tomorrow, Monday, August 24th, North Hall library will be open to students, faculty, staff, and community members for the following hours; Monday through Thursday 8 am to 9 pm, Friday 8 am to 4 pm, and Sunday 5 pm to 9 pm. The library will be closed on Saturdays

We encourage new and returning students to check out our private study rooms, group study areas, extensive physical media collection, course reserves, digital database access, and calendar of social events! If you have any questions, come meet us at the circulation desk, we’d be more than happy to help.

Bring your own craft to North Hall Library on Wednesday, August 19th, from 12 pm to 1 pm, to join us for a craft-and-chat! We will also be hosting a craft supply swap for anyone interested. Please bring any supplies (yarn, markers, paper, fabric, etc) you’d like to donate, but don’t worry if you don’t have any. The supply swap is free for all, regardless of donation. Crafternoons are held in the Traditional Reading Room, right across from the circulation desk. We hope to see you there!

Whether you have a knitting project you're working on, sketches to finish, or want to continue working on your macramé project from our last session, the historic Traditional Reading Room is the perfect quiet, inspiring space to get creative.

🏛️ Holiday Closure Notice: Juneteenth
In observance of Juneteenth, the North Hall Library will be closed on Friday, June 19th.

Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States and serves as a day of reflection, education, and celebration of freedom.

While our physical doors are closed for the holiday, our digital shelves never close! You can still access our online databases, e-books, and digital resources 24/7 through the library website.

We will reopen with regular summer hours on Monday, June 22nd. Have a safe and meaningful holiday!

📚 Fun Fact Friday: Pride Month Edition! 🏳️‍🌈
Did you know that the oldest documented gay rights organization in the United States dates all the way back to 1924?

Meet Henry Ge**er, the visionary who started it all. While stationed in Germany on U.S. Army duty, Ge**er experienced an open, vibrant LGBTQ+ community that inspired him. When he returned home, he wanted to replicate that sense of community and acceptance right here in the U.S.

In 1924, he founded The Society for Human Rights in Chicago.

It was an uphill battle from day one. Ge**er faced intense discrimination, threats, and even arrests just for advocating for basic human rights—but he never stopped fighting for the LGBTQ+ community.

His incredible legacy lives on. In 2015, the Henry Ge**er House in Chicago was officially declared a National Historic Landmark, ensuring his bravery and our history are never forgotten.

The Origins of Pride 🏳️‍🌈
Before it was a month-long global celebration, did you know Pride started as a single historic day?

On June 28, 1970—exactly one year after the Stonewall Uprising—activists organized Christopher Street Liberation Day in New York City, marking the very first Pride March.

Here are a few quick facts about that historic day:

A Bi-Coastal Movement: While Los Angeles also held a celebration that same day, NYC’s march was massive, with thousands of people stretching across 15 city blocks.

The Last Sunday in June: The event became an annual tradition held on the final Sunday of the month, going by several names over the years, including "Gay Pride Day."

The Blueprint for Today: This single day of liberation and protest laid the vital foundation for the modern Pride Month celebrations we observe every June.
