What’s that smell?! It must be Forensics!

Our Forensics learners are analyzing fiber evidence using observations and burn tests to investigate the characteristics of different materials. By examining how fibers react to heat—including how they burn, melt, and yes…smell—learners are gathering evidence to help identify unknown samples.

It may not be the best-smelling lab at JKSA, but it’s definitely hands-on science in action!

At JKSA, we know that failure isn’t the opposite of learning—it’s often an important part of it! Our first Failure Museum inductees are being recognized for taking a risk, learning from something that didn’t go as planned, and using that experience to fail forward. 💡

These learners showed us that mistakes aren’t something to hide—they’re opportunities to reflect, revise, and grow. And that is definitely worth a trophy!

It all starts with HELLO!

Next week, JKSA is celebrating Start With Hello Week, a time dedicated to helping learners recognize social isolation, reach out to others, and create a school community where everyone feels seen, included, and connected. 💚

Sometimes something as simple as a smile, an invitation to join in, or saying “hello” can make a big difference. Throughout the week, we’ll challenge our learners to make new connections, spread kindness, and make sure everyone knows they belong at JKSA.

6th grade STEM Career learners put their designs to the test today! After creating their products, teams gathered data, evaluated how well their designs performed, and work together to determine what worked- and what might need a redesign.

Because in STEM, the first solution isn't always the final solution. Testing, problem-solving, and improving are all part of the process.

After reading The Wise Old Woman, 7th grade ELAR learners are putting their inferencing and text-evidence skills to work in a new way! Learners are designing an underground living space for the wise old woman- but there's a catch: their designs must fit within an assigned region of Texas and use only the resources available there.

By combining evidence from the text with what they know about the setting and regional characteristics, learners are discovering how where you live can shape how you live.

There's been a lot of cool things going on here at JKSA. Over the weekend, several of our learners participated in the district UIL and took home 56% of all medals given. The Innovators of the month for January were recognized by the district as well. Our community Environmental Science class worked on their "plastics project," and learners learned about opportunity cost in Personal Finance. In 6th-grade Math, learners labeled slope in their names, and in 7th-grade Science, learners represented natural selection while playing a survival game. We would like to thank Lockheed Martin for allowing our learners to participate in their engineering challenges. Now, let's celebrate the end of the six weeks with a nice, long 4-day weekend!
